Very sensible and I agree Michael. To me, it is a pointless experience on New Year’s Day tearing off to south Devon to watch non league football but each to their own. I was still awake at 3am so never an issue I would have on January 1st.

Not a conspiracy did any one actually think that both clubs did not want to play that day and that RH was telling certain people at the club don’t leave for the game I was on the train when it was called off total waste of my time and money both clubs did not want the game on end off

A train to Torquay? Nearly 4 hours and £50 -how can that ever be worth it to watch a £15 game of non league football?

Spitsteve, all three ghosts would have a job convincing me a £50 8 hour round trip to Torquay is a rational thing to do.

Train to Torquay - on New Year's Day? You're having a laugh! ;-) Replacement buses all over the place too.
I expect most people would have driven, with petrol sharing maybe £20 a head, 3 hours each way on empty roads.
As usual, it depends what you go for - some people obviously tried to make a break of it, staying over a night or two. Some people may have fancied a day out at a seaside resort and maybe a few beers (for the non-drivers) too. Personally it'd take a lot to get me to do more than, say, a 100-mile round trip for 90 minutes of football. Combine it with something else - maybe. As I've said before, football isn't like something like theatre, where you can read the reviews and have a reasonably-informed opinion as to whether you are going to enjoy it or not.
But kudos to those who do these trips, the players should always be grateful to them, and I wouldn't dream of criticising them. And thinking of them, yes, it was a shame it was called off.

The sort of people who planned to go to Torquay, are the sort of people that make football the great game it is. I wouldn't do it today, not unless it was a vital game then I might. If I did I would travel overnight. What a poor game football would be, if for all the long trips only the home fans were in attendance. Sure as hell TV companies wouldn't be interested. You need both sets of fans. Long may people be willing to make these crazy journeys; and although I won't likely join them, I'll be only too happy to contribute to their costs.
For you people that go to the likes of Torquay. I salute you.

Agree with all that, however, the powers that be and TV companies seem to be making it harder for away fans, at all levels.
Ridiculous kick-off times that make public transport an impossible option, changes of kick-off time/day at short notice.... it's clear that away fans are not their priority, despite the advantages that they bring.
Oh yes, and dodgy postponements..... at least Torquay announced it fairly early, although not in time to help everyone. What really irritates me (and should be stopped) is where a local ref is brought in early, declares it on, only for the match ref to swan up later and decide that the pitch isn't fit after all, despite nothing changing in the meantime.

I don’t think at conference level it makes much difference whether away fans are there or not. The atmosphere is pretty muted anyway. As for an 8 hour £100 day out in Torquay after Xmas, not possible for most people with boring, yet real lives to lead involving kids, clearing away Xmas and generally helping out people around them who need it.

True and that's fair enough. However for those who can go, well done you.

I know a lot of guys whose wives are football widows and marriages a complete joke because of the ‘need’ for their old men to go and get bevved up every weekend at places like Torquay. No real kudos from me I’m afraid.

No real kudos from me I’m afraid. Well I took my wife and older daughter away for a few days in Dartmouth. Never felt the need to get bevved up. No problem with wives and husbands having separate interests. I am an occasional Shakespeare widower.

Credit to you sir but you know the sort of ppl I’m talking about. Every week every match, no problems with separate interests but when a marriage becomes two strangers lodging together it’s not right

As for an 8 hour £100 day out in Torquay after Xmas, not possible for most people with boring, yet real lives to lead involving kids, clearing away Xmas and generally helping out people around them who need it. I am a full time carer for my wife. Going to football home or away is MY respite. Once i'm on that coach nothing can affect my day. For a few hours I have my own life where I can make my own choices. So Willk I have a boring and real life which involves my wife, my kids and my grandchildren. I spend every hour of my life- EXCEPT WHEN I AM AT FOOTBALL- clearing up and helping people. Please don't judge others by what you assume is a REAL life. In all aspects of life we all have our own challenges, our own issues and our own way of coping with life. Watching EFC home and away is mine. Don't belittle and insult me by suggesting my life isn't real.
