Was gutted to have missed it but the 1-0 win at Crewe sounds like a real “I was there” day

No Michael, that’s the point in your aged addled brain you’re not getting. The relic diehard like you won’t care at all about the quality of what you see but you’re in a tiny minority here. Most sane rational people do care as watching sport is about entertainment whether you like it or not. Why are Ronnie o Sullivan’s matches full and peter Ebdons empty? Why did people turn out for Alex Higgins and jimmy white but not Steve Davis?

Not sure about a 'tiny minority' feeling the same as michaelefc, and I can also see why the 1-0 wins mentioned could be 'memorable'. But I agree that not many NEW fans will be happy with boring 1-0 wins all the time, although there are always the 'glory hunters' (as opposed to loyal (willk might say 'overloyal') fans like michaelefc). Mind you, I haven't seen Man Utd fans leaving in their droves this season, and they're supposed to be boring (but successful).....
Best 5-4 that I can remember was Colden Common v Infinity a few years ago - the visitors were 4-1 with half an hour to go, the Common centre half scored a hat-trick from open play, and they won in injury time. Infinity ended up with four red cards too. And a player rushed off to break up a potential fight between another player and rival fans. Terrific stuff. You wouldn't get that in the Premiership.

Hants-that sounds great. I just can’t see how if I turn to someone today and say ‘you fancy coming along, paying £18 to sit and watch a dreary, long ball, tedious game with no goals ‘ they’d jump at it . Michael says that does not matter, basically it does for the future survival of any non league club.

I think that as the Winchester v Salisbury match which finished 5-4 was played on a Friday night 6 weeks ago between two local teams some people on here might have been in attendance. I think that Eastleigh once lost a Wessex League game 6-4 and last season a Hellenic League game finished 9-6.
There have been a few Conference National games involving Eastleigh which have seen both teams scoring at least three times, but I thinkwe may have to go back to the Conference South days to find a match in which both teams have scored four times,

As I said, we won't attract many NEW fans playing the kind of football we are (not sure where you get the £18 from, but still applies to £15 or £12).
Just out of interest, willk, were you watching EFC regularly when they won the Conf South? Was their football any more entertaining then, in your opinion? It was certainly more successful (using the time-honoured method of buying in experienced players) but was it any more entertaining? Crowds did go up that season, too - successful side?
I saw three games that season (H&Y, Cambridge U and away at Havant and Wat) and they were all awful. Having said that, I did buy a season ticket the next year - as I've said before, I saw it as a good price for a good level of football with a decent seat. The first one I've ever bought. And I remember that first season in the NL has being pretty entertaining under RH(may have been the novelty value, too).
Yes, I regret not seeing that Winchester v Salisbury game earlier this season.

So basically goals make memories which for any young (or old) fan is what they hang onto. I have yet to hear anyone talking about a dull tedious 1-0 win with a scrambled winner that sticks in their memories. The only people who want 0-0s and 1-0 (win at all costs) are the diehard relics who are the clubs past, not their future. You won’t grow the fanbase with the way we are set up to play at the moment because it’s boring-and funnily enough people in their free time don’t want to pay money to be bored. I’m not really sure what the debate is really as it’s a no brainer Think you are missing my point again Will, people remember the 5-4 games because they are so rare, one every 20 or 30 years (as evidenced with the comments on here), so your constant bleating for exciting football is pointless, there is an opposition team set up to stop you doing so, therefore teams will always have to adapt and that means attrition not excitement.
Games that are exciting are so because they are rare, if they happened every week then the excitement would not be there as it would become an expectation. If you want a sport with lots and lots of scoring try Basketball, if you want 10 or so goals a game have a try of ice hockey, neither guarantee excitement.
The most exciting game I have ever seen (and no I wasn't one of the 300,000 who claim to have been there) was Arsenal winning the title at Anfield in 1989 two goals and only one in the first 92 minutes but no 5-4 will ever beat the excitement that night.
