I do agree with both views as things stand surely no one wants to see us playing the way we are and succumbing to dreary 1-0 defeats etc. However I don't think this would be a talking point if we were winning games and challenging at the top of the league. I do believe winning for your team is part of the entertainment, the atmosphere becomes louder, the pints taste sweeter and you get a general feel good factor.
I see where Michael is coming from I think I'd rather see Eastleigh grind out victories and win the league rather than see 3-3 draws and finish mid table. But unfortunately we're not in that place at the moment which is why we're moaning about the style of play, the performances, the manager etc. First half of the poppies game was horrendous we were playing a full strength team and they were just slicing it out of play, no movement, I think it was only cus second half poppies got knackered and just camped themselves in their own half we were able to actually play a bit of football. Wouldn't happen against a national league side

Seems to be a ceasefire in hostilities at last, this thread in particular got a bit personal and am glad it's calmed down, people actually being dare I say nice! We all want the team to do well, yes entertaining and a big win but at the mo just a win would suffice. i am only a fan of 4 years standing but love a day at EFC. Hopefully things can get better soon.

I was at the game on Tuesday and in the first half, what was virtually a first team was playing as if they'd never met each other before. Back to basics? They couldn't even do that. Balls hit too long, misplaced passes, getting caught in possession too often, no movement, mistake after mistake. In the words of a certain gent who mans the turnstiles, it was embarrassing. OK it was better in the second half. But as far as entertainment went, Poppies were doing it all in the first half.
I want to see my team play competently, well, perhaps at times even entertainingly, but at the moment, that E word seems a long way off. So I'll put up with what we get & keep hoping for better things to come.

All of the above points are totally well made and I get all of them. However, a 1-0 scrambled win in the last minute does nothing except paper over cracks for a few more days. Apart from 2 more points it does nothing. The maidenhead comeback was actually the worst thing possible, ok, to the ardent 'get points at all costs-nothing else matters' it is a point but actually what it was, was license for Hill to squat in that dugout for a few more matches claiming the players are still with him (which I don't think they are at all) Sometimes the bigger picture is equally about performances and team spirit/enjoyment. The players cant be enjoying this depressing drudge every match so what hope is there?

Have to agree. Can't see how it's going to turn around for the better really. Like many have said before if it were a season of transition and building we need a team full of mileys, howes and Matthews. If the older guys weren't brought in for instant success then god knows what they're for

I think Miley, and especially Matthews, are very promising, but they can't run a game on their own. The midfield needs someone to protect it, and probably also needs someone with a bit of experience and 'know-how'. We've had people like Taylor and Togwell doing that - injuries have affected them, and latterly Hollands has done it, and Heslop has done well when I've seen him.
We badly need to look at our full backs, as I keep saying. You can't expect Shaw to fit in to this level (two levels up from before) immediately, and I won't go on about Hoyte again.
Central defence has been fine, but has started to creak at the edges a bit recently (probably due to a lot of pressure, and RH's ill-advised criticism of Howe). If Howe finishes his loan spell in January, we need someone else to replace him. Howe has also been captain and organises a lot of the defence, besides his other skills. A fully-fit Cresswell might be able to do that, but we need cover.
A few things to think about for the New Year. Not even mentioned the forwards if Williamson's not there. Nor the keeper.

More than a few things to think about. Shaw has gone missing a couple of times when other teams have scored and Hoyte seems to get lead on his legs when he reaches the half way line. I can only think hes been told to do that.

I think that it is clear that Michael would prefer to win a drab game 1-0, than lose an exciting game 5-4 which I think many other people would in the current circumstances, but I also think that many people would much prefer a game to be won 3-2 with plenty of excitement than 1-0 in an uninspiring game, but this is something I address in the thread away to Halifax.

The best thing about all these threads and we do seem to have a lot on the same subject is the mention of 5-4 as an option.
how many of us have been watching football for years?
How many games ending 5-4 have taken place in total (let alone at a game you've attended) at this level or above in that time?
It's not an option, it's a very rare treat.
If it was to happen on a regular basis there would be a defensive crisis.

In 53 years of watching football I don't think I have ever seen a 5-4. I can think of two games with 10 goals. Chelsea 5 West Ham 5 (1966 I think). West Ham scored 2 late goals and the Chelsea fans were furious! I also saw QPR 8 Sheffield Wednesday 2 in the league cup, around 1973. Strangely I enjoyed that one. There may have been others but I cannot remember them. As for Eastleigh one of my favourite all time games was a game at Bemerton, the year we won the Wessex league, we won 6-0 and Robbie Matthews, I think, scored 4. We could have scored 12. The Bemerton manager was very graceless in defeat saying we shouldn't have been playing in that league and our budget was unfair. Not sure what the neutral thought of it; but I was thoroughly entertained, as was the EFC contingent around me.

Must be 50 years since I've seen a 5-4 game and I've been watching from County League to Premier League. Only ever seen a 9 or 10 goal game once that I can remember clearly and that was in 1960 when Wimbledon Reserves beat South Vale Glacier of the Parthenon League (where Boreham Wood FC used to play) 9-0 in a cup game at Plough Lane.
Yes, I know that Eastleigh lost 2-8 to Thurrock in February 2010 but I spent the game waiting to pick Jill up from the General Hospital that day.

I have to go back to 1984 for an Everton 5-4 win which was v Watford. I also rank two 3-3 draws as amongst the most entertaining matches I have seen. In 1992 I saw David Unsworth make his Everton debut as a sub at White Hart Lane and score a very dramatic equaliser to bring Everton back to 3-3 after Spurs had lead 3-0 at half time. That was also Lineker's last home match for Tottenham. Then last season at the Vitality stadium AFC Bournemouth let a half time 3-0 lead against Arsenal go when they conceded 3 in the second half. Unfortunate but very entertaining. Sanchez was unplayable in that match. There, so at least I have kept a tenuous link with the original subject of this thread which was about the other Bournemouth.

I'd forgotten the Eastleigh 2 Thurrock 8 game. I was at that. I remember the Thurrock manager saying on another day, it could have ended 8-8. Fascinating for the neutral I'm sure. Needless to say I didn't enjoy that one.

So basically goals make memories which for any young (or old) fan is what they hang onto. I have yet to hear anyone talking about a dull tedious 1-0 win with a scrambled winner that sticks in their memories. The only people who want 0-0s and 1-0 (win at all costs) are the diehard relics who are the clubs past, not their future. You won’t grow the fanbase with the way we are set up to play at the moment because it’s boring-and funnily enough people in their free time don’t want to pay money to be bored. I’m not really sure what the debate is really as it’s a no brainer

Many many years ago, under the management then of David Hughes, season 2006/7, we were on a dreadful run and we played at Basingstoke. It was widely expected we would lose. As it was DH first or second match in charge we travelled in numbers. We supported the team from the first whistle to the last. We barely got out of our half, and whacked the ball long at every opportunity. From just about our one and only attack we took the lead and spent the whole of the second half in and around the box, kicking it anywhere, we had quite a wind against us. A dire, dire game of football, but a vital win, and we celebrated as though we had won the European champions league. One of the happiest days of my time supporting EFC. For the neutral, probably a shocking game. Did we care? - did we ****.
