Can somebody explain to me why the linesman (I'm old fashioned) waits an age before raising their flag. I've seen an off side closer to the halfway line but the linesman never acted until the attacking player, who is obviously taking an active part in procedures, has chased the ball to the penalty area before play is stopped for a free kick.
On a few occasions I have seen attacking players get some petty heavy challenges when,in fact, the play should of been stopped for a free kick long before a serious injury could occur.

I agree - this rule is cr*p and could lead to injuries occurring unnecessarily and who knows what else.
I think it's something to do with giving VAR a chance to judge that the offside is valid before confirming it. In which case a) it doesn't apply to the vast majority of football games and b) in England, with the time VAR takes, they won't have adjudged it by the time the attack is over.
It's almost as irritating as watching a penalty taker stop in the middle of their run-up and therefore gain an unfair advantage.

A couple of seasons ago, the Portland Timbers keeper damaged his ACL trying to stop an attacker who was clearly offside, and the Lino didn't flag until after the play ended. Don't agree about the penalty takers though. They SHOULD have an unfair advantage. The only reason they have a penalty is due to an unfair play against them.

But then it's the same for both sides.

I think it is very possible that some goalkeepers move before penalty kicks are taken.
I think with offside there could be some hesitation as to who might be playing who onside, but I agree that the delay can potentially be too long.
On the subject of offside does anyone remember the controo0versial goal in the match between Leeds and WBa in 1971. I have recently seen the incident again on YouTube.
