Deserved to lose today, we were second best everywhere. Could and should have been 3 or 4 for Southend as the 1-0 flattered how poor we were.

Southend were a very good team and should make the playoffs on this showing.
As said, you should have won by more given the missed chances, and it took what to me looked a dubious penalty to win the game.
We played a weakened midfield (presumably with Newport in mind) and paid for it. Quigley was subbed at half time after receiving a yellow card for a tackle which the visiting fans and players obviously thought was a red. Personally I thought it was an unorthodox but fair tackle, no outstretched leg and seemed to be in control of it.
Miley has blossomed, given the responsibility and freedom that he didn't have here (was always in a supporting role), and he's obviously an important player for you, brought straight back after injury.
Good to see Southend on the way back, brilliant support today. Nothing learned by Newport today, I see they won 1-0 at Doncaster.

Cav Miley has been fabulous for us since his signing and it's a mystery why he isn't playing in FL on his showings with us. We are still lacking in fire power but when Cardwell returns and we bring in another forward permanently then we will see. All you can do in this league is keep winning and see where it takes you. The immediately important thing for you guys is that you didn't take any serious injuries or knocks before the Newport joust. Win, and then Man U are your reward. If that happens it will be a fabulous game, ours certainly was in the League Cup in the days of Fergie and Rooney and co. We did them 1-0 and still bang on about it now! Good luck for the rest of the season and may the power of the tennis balls be with you

The bookies don't fancy us much for this one. We are 100/30 and Southend 5/6. Well the bookies had it right today unfortunately. Can't recall the Silverlake feeling like an away game as it did today - Southend fans were the the more vocal and boisterous throughout. Quigley getting a lot of stick from them in the first half with no backup from the home fans. A really sloppy performance from start to finish, we certainly didn't deserve anything from the game. Definitely felt like minds were elsewhere/no one wanting to risk an injury. Maguire seems to have gone off the boil a little which is a concern - his usually excellent dead ball accuracy specifically has been woeful of late. Have to say the officiating was abysmal without exception - linesman flagging some of the most inexplicable offsides I've ever seen in the second half, and the ref even managed to book the wrong Southend player - but not to the point where we can use it as an excuse. Hopefully Tuesday will be a different occasion and a different performance - if we turn up and play like we did today then Newport will absolutely spank us like they did Barnet in the replay.

I am surprised we put out such a strong team, I think that was probably the main reason for the odds, there was an assumption that we would rest a few players.
It was a tricky one today, hard not to have an eye on Tuesday.

It was a tricky one today, hard not to have an eye on Tuesday. Given that we keep leaving out our best player from last season and not trusting the youngsters (when is Yang going to get some game time, why have we not got Simpson back so we have a striker on the bench, where is Challwell) I did find today a really odd selection with an odd formation that Hill at least changed - although it did not make much difference - as he could see it was not working.

That’s three league games on the bounce that we have lost and yesterday’s performance was one of the poorest I have seen in a long while. They don’t seem to be playing for the club just themselves which is why they all seemed to have an eye on the game on Tuesday. No passion, no desire yet we continue with exactly the same players. Now just putting in various positions to ensure we don’t have to make a change to the starting 11. Since when was Hodge a midfielder and Clampin is certainly no striker. We have young players, not even making the bench. I just don’t get it. What is the point of this club having a youth program. I listened to Stuart’s interview and he talked about wanting to reunite the club with its fan base. One way of doing that is playing our players rather than old journeymen who are just here for the pay check. Have seen so many comments on Facebook after the game that clearly shows I am not the only one thinking this. Seems to me that the majority of forward thinking clubs have a desire to develop their young players by giving them game time rather than banishing them to the stands.

We haven't lost 3 league games on the bounce But I agree , yesterday was an squad game and EDS game. Other than an extra game played we had no gain or loss from yesterday, literally a free hit to rest players

Sometimes RH interviews give me the impression he's not really that bothered about a defeat, Gateshead was one, yesterday's was another. Some people play a lot of money to come along, so if he's pretty blase about it, it doesn't encourage them to come again.
As I said, I think he played a weakened midfield and it cost us. I've never rated Nwabuokei, putting Hodson in the Taylor role was interesting as he's a decent defender with good passing ability, and I think it worked to some extent. Langston's been in good form at the back so his suspension will be a big miss for Tuesday. Sure, Quigley and Maguire were on yellow cards and may have got reds, so were substituted, but also the former had only just come back after an absence and so probably isn't 100% match fit, and, as noticed by a few people, the latter isn't on top form at the moment and needs to be kept fresh for Tuesday - preferably needs to kept in cotton wool, since he's our most creative player. So it seemed sensible to sub them.
Luckily it's very competitive between places 4-15 (maybe more) in the league this year and we're still in with a chance of the playoffs with a good run, it must be difficult to keep the team (and the manager, by the looks of it) concentrating on league games at the moment with the FA Cup furore at the forefront. Anyway, the situation will be clearer soon. The Oldham game is another big one next week but I fear that will also be domonated by what happens on Tuesday, one way or another. Inconsistency is still the key word.

It’s just that 4-4 draw felt like a loss as we should have beaten D&R easily. But still makes no difference to the starting line up. Play well, play poorly no change so creates a flat performance like yesterday

Not the best of games understand all eyes for Eastleigh on their cup replay being arguably the most important in your history to bring the biggest ever game to the Silverlake. That was evident in the Eastleigh performance was a pretty straight forward game for us with Eastleigh not really offering a threat throughout. Thought McDonnell in goal made 2-3 excellent saves and deservedly man of the match. We remained in control throughout and should have scored more showing our desperate need for a striker.
Without a shadow of a doubt Quigley deserved a sending off for a shocking tackle on Miley, throughout the officiating was poor though but something we are used to at this level. Atmosphere was poor had a better atmosphere the 2 previous games at the Silverlake but our following remained vocal throughout. Miley has become the player he never got the chance to become with you and showed his quality yesterday, great to have him back.
Although some will say you should have played a weaker team you still went strong yesterday, 3 changes I think but 1 enforced due to red card at Newport. Fortunately for us Taylor, Kensdale and Ralph kept your front line at bay as they offered no real threat all game.
Best of luck to you Spitfires against Newport and hope the outcome is the dream tie against United.
Might see you again in the playoffs 🦐

Some decent highlights here, the Quigley incident around 3:55 and the penalty around 8:35. I still can't make my mind up about either. I saw the former from the West Stand so I appreciate I didn't have the best view. These are from the South Stand, I think. youtu.be/uGcAOX6E2qwSouthend forum is entertaining, they don't seem to have a great opinion of either our team or our manager (and his interview). And the commentary!

Very underwhelming yesterday, but understandable that the Newport game was on the minds of the management team. Agree with the thoughts of the Southend fan that it was a straight red card.
Am I right in saying Manchester United have never beat Southend?
