Some may be aware R Solent are covering the Weymouth game tonight. I posed a question to them via Twitter about covering Eastleigh as they can't favour one club over the other. Their reply was:- We'll be mixing up our Non League commentaries throughout the season which will include Eastleigh soon.
We'll miss Ian Wilding for sure and his travels to the far flung parts of the country for our away games. But for home games, I'm not bothered because I've signed up to Spitfires TV for the season

Feels like when the club (not current regime) ditched Jos at Radio Spitfire(?) for the BBC and Ian Wilding. Sometimes we have to move on to reap better benefits in terms of producing what we need and flexibility of having our own in house personnel. I really like Ian Wilding as I did/do Jos Kingsley, all have their own qualities. The club has helped a lot of students now and has received benefits in return from the social media side which is just incredible now really across all platforms and now we are seeing the club produce and run its own football games online in return for money. Sometime you really have to pinch yourself at how far the club keeps moving, I think the streaming will be here to stay now as there will be a need from fans who don't feel safe attending games possibly even up to another year or more so the National League should still allow it once fans are slowly allowed back in.

My recall Callum is that Josh called it a day himself. I never listened to his commentaries but thought it a shame he decided to pack it in because he seemed to have a loyal following.

Good that Joss's contribution to Eastleigh football club is acknowledged. I believe that he did his commentaries for 10 years (2005/06 to 2015/16)and as far as I know he did his work voluntarily and without any payment.
I got the impression that when he left there were technical issues and that he felt he did not get sufficient support in trying to resolve these.

Looking at other local BBC stations it looks to me if most continue to provide National League commentary for their local sides. I may possible have missed one or two, with so few fixtures so far, but it seems to me just Eastleigh-Radio Solent and London based sides are missing out. But, then again, didn't Zoe Ball xupposedly get a huge, half million plus, pay rise despite losing more than a million audience wise compared to Chris Evans.
Arsenal are rumoured to have saved about 20% of a single one off players weeks wages by sacking Gunasorous.

Reminded me of the original Liverpool FC plan to put all their non football staff on furlough and the furore that created. not to mention the amusement amongst Evertonians. Re the Radio Solent coverage, does anyone know whether their abandonment of the Eastleigh commentary has anything to do with Covid? If not, is it time to launch a petition? we wouldn't want Radio Solent thinking we don't care.

All the comments when it was pointed out Ian Wilding was being cut adrift from doing Eastleigh commentary was that it was money saving. I have not seen Covid mentioned at all regarding this.
During first three games the following have been covered live by local BBC radio:- Chesterfield - Sheffield Torquay - Devon Yeovil - Somerset Woking - Surrey Hartlepool - Tees Notts County - Nottingham Kings Lynn - Norfolk Wrexham - Wales Boreham Wood - Three Counties Sutton - Surrey Dover - Kent Aldershot - Surrey
Can not see coverage for Bromley, Maidenhead, Solihull, Wealdstone, Barnet, Halifax, Eastleigh, Altrincham, Stockport, Dag and Red and Weymouth (had a one off on their first home game only).
But it is early days , so not 100% my analysis is foolproof yet.

I believe that we are less than 5 miles from a Premier Division club, less than 22 miles from a league 1 club and less than 32 miles from a championship club. I wonder how many non-league clubs outside London are in a similar position.

Not sure the relevance of near by clubs with regard to commentary. Radio Solent covered National League and above on live commentaries. Cliff Pledge covered all Havant games a couple of years ago and the norm would be for them to be covering Eastleigh and Weymouth live this season as well as Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth each week. As a cost cutting exercise they have abandoned the National League sides. Other BBC local radio stations have not. BBC Surrey cover three NL games. How many clubs does BBC Sheffield cover as well as Chesterfield, certainly United, Wednesday and Rotherham. My point was the saving is minimal when compared to huge increases they are making in other areas.
On another note of cost cutting just how appealing are the Echo now for all no league coverage, meanwhile the News continues with great spreads and details on non league clubs as well as a very good social media stream covering news and scores from that area of Hampshire. Years ago the Echo were miles ahead of the News on all non league and youth football coverage. It is very much a sign of the times and one I find very depressing.

I also think that it is a pity that the non-league coverage has been reduced, but I think that one of the problems is that it is easier to get information from other sources than it was.
People used to read the Echo for non-league news, but now they can get it from twitter, club websites or the like. With more games now been shown on You Tube and clubs having their own TV channels I expect that some radio stations may be in a position where they can view the games in their studio and provide updates as and when and might in some cases consider that as an option to relying on one person travelling the length and breadth of the country for this.
I would have thought that having three clubs playing at a higher level in close proximity could be a factor. I would guess that in Dover's case that only Gillingham would be in that category.
As for Chesterfield I do wonder whether if Boreham Wood were in the same geographical position as Chesterfield they would get the same amount of coverage on Sheffield radio as there is little doubt that of the two clubs Chesterfield have the larger fan base and a longer history of competing in senior football and it was not long ago that they came so very close to reaching the F A Cup final.
Regarding the Echo I also think their sports department also cover papers such as the Romsey Advertiser, Hampshire Chronicle, Salisbury Journal, Basingstoke Gazette and perhaps others. I am not sure whether the Portsmouth News also cover papers, but I wonder how the comparison would look if we aggregated the coverage across all the papers they cover.
