Willk, your perspective on the game is absolutely valid. It just lacks soul. It doesn't matter whether your team are non league nobodies or Tottenham Hotspur. There's nothing to beat following them away. I was never in the past a regular away fan, even of my lifetime club Everton - though I have often gone to their away games in London, down here at Southampton and occasionally in the midlands. For a variety of reasons, a couple of seasons after Eastleigh FC caught my imagination I found myself following around 70% of their away fixtures. Some of the memories from those trips will be with me probably for however many years I have left. I am not sure I fully understand why that is because as you rightly point out it is not logical to spend hours on motorways or being diverted in the dead of night into the wilderness coming back from far flung evening matches. I am now finding with a changing situation for myself that I will probably go to fewer away fixtures but I'll welcome the chance to do those I can and will probably relish the agony. Actually that makes me think - perhaps it's the agony we sometimes endure together as kindred spirits that makes it what it is. Everyone will talk about the trips to Bolton and Swindon but for me the Hornchurches and Wellings are equally memorable.

Just cannot for the life of me figure out why anybody would want to drive/do a 10 hr round trip to watch a meaningless game which was always going to end in disaster. We went Willk, because we support Eastleigh FC. If everyone had that attitude then our lads would have played in front of just the home fans. I don't think they'd have felt very supported if that were to be the case. It was actually a lovely day with great company in our fellow travelling supporters. It was also extra special as we were privileged to be able to share in one young man's birthday celebrations. I haven't been to many long distance grounds in the past for reasons personal to myself and many of my fellow supporters. However, after yesterday's fun and camaraderie on the trip, I plan to do a lot more next season. The atmosphere at away grounds always feels so much better too; whether there be 30 or 1000 fans there. Always manage to make new friends along the way too 😀 Hope to see you at Solihull Moors Willk and cannot wait to see your fancy dress costume. Following discussions with the rest of the idiots making the long trip I think you have some strong competition 😉

Loved away games in my youth. The game got in the way of a great day out. Oh the stories...

Having fallen in love with football in early 1965 as a 9 year old boy, one thing I have learnt about football is it has sod all to do with rationality, or anything to do with common sense. It just grabs you as it grabs you. The fact that EFC took a good number to North Ferriby, just proves what a hold it has on all our lives. As for you Willk, you actually don't come across as a football fan. You might attend games and you might follow it, but you don't come across as a fan. Like with most things in life, the more you put in, the more you get out. Try investing a bit more into it, maybe you'll actually fall in love. Happy Easter to one and all.

Not really about falling in love with things. I probably haven't got a deep relationship with Eastleigh and it matters not a lot in the grand scheme to me whether they win or lose, as it shouldn't to any person really-it is just a game after all. I happily follow them and buy a season ticket every year, if I have something else on on a match day i don't go. I don't work all week for my 90 minutes at Eastleigh every two weeks clearly unlike some on here. I actually think my my mentality is pretty grounded and common sensical about what is after all a hobby.

Great post willk, and I think it bears out what I wrote. I actually wish I could have an attitude a bit more like you, but my relationship with football goes a lot deeper. For me it REALLY is a love affair. And if that makes you think I'm a bit mentally unhinged - well you do have a point
(A rider here; I am talking about myself, and absolutely nobody else.)

Morning Will, if life is too precious to spend time on the motorway to watch NL football, I guess the questions have to be:-
what should we be doing with our precious lives?
what did Willk do with his precious life on Friday when thousands were wasting theirs?
is there a level of football that wouldn't be a waste (i.e. Championship maybe?)
Love to get some direction on these matters especially today. Thanks

Happy Easter westendspitfire. For me, it's a waste of time personally. As for Friday , in the morning I did some 10k training in preparation for a race I'm entering this weekend for cancer research and in the afternoon I took the dog for a long walk on the beach. Each to their own.

what should we be doing with our precious lives?
One thing is for sure. We come into the world with nothing and we leave the world with nothing. Whatever you spend the bits in between doing, just make sure you do it with a thankful heart. An appropriate message for Easter Sunday...perhaps.
See you most of you tomorrow.

Still squabbling on here then, for goodness sake, everyone has their own agenda and time restraints so if you travel here there and everywhere then great, if you go as and when then also great!! We are all on the same side so there you have it. For my part I watch the saints when the mood takes me, obviously watch the spitfires when I can, travel to Bath Rugby at least 3 times a season and visit Hampshire to watch a spot of cricket so mix that with having kids and a social life then you can see how some peoples support differs, it makes you no less of a fan. If you choose to go home and away all season to one team then fine, aslong as everyone is happy with their lot. Will now get back to my Easter Day, happy Easter to one and all, roll on next season as 3 of my teams haven't had the best of seasons this year!!!! Mayb Hants can salvage an average sporting year for me with a trophy at the end of summer? Who knows, I will support all my teams as much as I can next year all the same!!

Absolutely spot on post. I personally would hate to have the kind of life where a trip to north ferrisby was the highlight of my week. Eastleigh, as Hampshire ccc, Southampton, snooker, running, quiz nights, my profession, family, dog walking and friends all contribute to a healthy balance that a normal person needs.

Apologies Willk here but I'm a bit confused by the term 'normal person'. Could you just either use different terminology (since it could be interpreted in a negative way) or advise me what 'normal' means? Many thanks.

Not sure I agree that sitting at the Rose Bowl freezing my butt off in April qualifies. Still, I remember those days when the football and cricket never overlapped - when Corithinian-Casuals' home games were played at the Oval and Yorkshire shared Bramall Lane.
