Incredible signing to drop from Coventry to National league level. I hope this signing is not connected to Partington's injury on Tuesday though.

Potentially a great signing - fitness issues and/or injury have been the problem in the past - managed just 50% of games in his 4 seasons at Sheffield Wednesday (2 of which were in the Championship). No one can doubt how serious EFC are.

He is only 28, thought he was older than that.
Really good signing if he can stay fit.

I would have been excited had this signing happened 30-40 days ago and the player was fully fit, I suspect that's why he's ended up with us.
But we have now bought 5 CB's in the transfer window plus Richard Duffy which did/didn't happen, I really feel sorry for the lads left out, none of them are too local to Eastleigh so I'm guessing will all be travelling 70+ miles each way to Eastleigh or have moved here like Reid did. 3 of them will become surplus quite sharpish, Ayo has yet to feature due to injury (?) and yet in my opinion will be better than Essam, Dugdale but has seen two new CB's arrive with a better pedigree before he has even played a league match.

Hi Eastleigh fans
Really surprised that Reda dropped down to the conference to be honest, most Cov fans would have liked him to stay, on a pay as you play contract but that wasn't to be.
Reda is an absolute quality defender, you wont lose too many games when he is playing and he also scores a fair few goals from set plays. On the downside his injury record is pretty atrocious, if Eastleigh can get 20+ games out of him they have done very well.
Good luck for the season, hope you make it into the Football league (will probably be playing us next season)
Regards
Cov Lad

Spot on. I got shot down with my pre season friendly analyses when I said we were no stronger in defence and that we had made poor signings and I wasn't impressed. Since then we have signed Cresswell and Johnson, so they will be first choice if fit, or unless Johnson goes in at left back. Our early pre season signings (i said excluding Wilson and Mandron) will now see only possibly Pipe or Howells start as i expect one will make way quite soon. Footballers are paid well, we know that, so I don't have much sympathy on that front, but it's still a short career and I hope we don't start getting a reputation in all this if we start shipping some new ones out quite sharply. I've said Bird is a pointless signing also, so although Creswell and Johnson may have been our first options and too good not to sign, there are still questions over our transfers. Its not all about, great, another signing to improve us. There is a wider picture than just on the pitch, Dugdale the prime example, clearly not good enough the minute first saw him, but we have uprooted him and moved him down here on probably what was an expected first team player. Yes, I know, probably paid handsomely, but that's not the point. This is not meant as a slight on SD so I hope it's not interpreted that way. It's his money and up to him what he does with it. It's great he wants to achieve also. I just wish we got it right first time, well, at least more often than currently are on the face of it with regards transfers.

On the face of it, it does seem like "sweet shop" recruiting, same thing we went through when SD first came in and Bairdy went crazy bringing in players he didnt know much about nor had seen any/many of them play recently. I think at the end of last season, we started looking around at who was available and went in and made quite a few early purchases, then of course, other/better players become available, so we have felt we couldn't turn these options down and have further enhanced the squad, despite us already having cover in some of those same positions. I'm sure we will now see a few releases, which will be expensive because it will mean paying up 1-2 year contracts for players who may never even kick a ball for us in a league game, or, more likely, a few will be pushed out on loan. The worrying thing for me is, that it doesn't show us in good light as a club, and will make the outside world looking in, think we don't know what we are doing with our recruitment and of course we will be tagged even more so with the moneybags moniker, given we are signing L1 players, who won't be coming here for average non league wages. I'm not bothered about the money side of things, that's SD's concern and if he's fine with it, then we shouldn't be concerned. I do worry though about what all this does for team morale. 3 weeks ago we were told we had a good bunch and that the squad we had was good enough to challenge for the title. But since then we have bought in another 3 players and we may still be looking for 1 more. This means that several players who thought they would be starting players, are now even struggling to get into the matchday 16, and when that happens you tend to get niggles and unhappy players, who can be disruptive around the club if not dealt with. I think that will test Toddy's managerial skills off the pitch. As i have stated on another thread, these players won't be happy being out of the 16 and playing Wyvern football. You really can't have the likes of Dugdale, Ayo, Yemi, Dawson, Reda, Pipe, Wilson, Bird & Huddart playing every week in Wyvern games, it will be humiliating for some of these lads playing against 16-19 yr old scholars in that league. If they are coming back from injury then fine, but just to give them a game, come on? You cannot expect Peaks & Strevs to motivate them to play at that level. I share Callum's view, that whilst i applaud us bringing in top quality players who will no doubt improve the team, i just wish we got our recruitment right first time around. I'm sure SD and Toddy will learn from this, and perhaps not do so much business so soon in PS next time around. We now need to settle on a team, move a few out on loan, and get on with the season, before we find ourselves with an unsettled squad that has fallen 15 points behind the leaders, before we even get out of September. At least we'll win every Wyvern game 6-0....

I think the question is, how big do you want your first team squad to be?
Last season (IMO) we were exposed at times by injuries/suspension and not having enough good quality cover. Signing someone on loan on Wed and then putting them straight in the team on Sat without having met the team didn't work particularly well.
If we've decided to have a larger squad then that's probably good for our chances of success, but as everyone says it does mean that the manager does have to keep all squad members happy and may mean that some will leave. I'm not privy as to how many of the squad are on 1-2 year contracts and how many we would have to pay off in that situation, but if we're seen as a revolving door, that can't be good for anybody either.

The major point here is what a landmark signing this could be. Just take a few minutes and read some of the feedback and you'll see that our club is getting noticed all over the country. That is a wonderful thing. A real statement of intent and a real "line in the sand" moment demonstrating how far this club has come. Bring it on I say. Spitfires up, up and away!
PS: thanks for the post Covlad. Hope this season goes well for you too.

Spoke to Toddy before the Braintree game and he said that Ayo wasn't injured so surprised he hasn't figured in our opening games.

Unbelievable signing! This is like Man Utd signing Michael Owen - he's so good, he must be signed as will win us games IF he is fit. Its like the equivilant of Saints signing Jack Wiltshire - complete no brainer. Or when West Ham signed Andy Carroll. Brilliant, brilliant signing, the guy is far too good for us - well done Eastleigh.
Hopefully it won't be a signing similar to Owen Hargreaves when he went to Man Utd who played about 5 games a season!
If someone in the squad is feeling disappointed about this signing, Todd needs to manage that - I don't think he can though and someone else will leave.
I am surprised we drop players so quickly but not the manager that keeps signing these players, then finding someone better. Hopefully our scouts don't notice Steve Bruce, Andre Villas-Boas, Sherwood (please, no), Steve 'brolly' McLaren (please, no no), Micky Adams and alike are all free.........

One gripe, I wish we got more information. What's the situation with Ayo? What was the true story about the Saints full back that recently left?
Blimey, we have some players now................
