No it wasn't, it is typical England with a negative manager who is afraid to try and win a game. He tried to defend a one goal lead, his substitutions showed his true colours, all the pre tournament talk of taking the game to the opposition was just that...talk. Kane should have been off after 65 minutes as he was not in the game, but kept him on to take CORNERS for gods sake!!!!!! He takes off Rooney for Wilshere, then Sterling for Milner and in the process of putting on Henderson for Lallana when the final whistle blew. Negative, negative, negative. If he'd have put Vardy and Sturridge or Rashford on, Russia would have been pushed back, worried about their pace on the break for the killer second goal, instead by trying to defend the one goal, Russia were allowed to push forward and take the risk, Kane upfront and out of sorts was not a threat anyway. Would the Russian captain have been anywhere near our penalty box if we had those strikers on the pitch......you know the answer to that one. Bale will terrify the England back line on Thursday, and if they let Ramsey play his game we'll lose. Hodgson has put his team under enormous pressure because he lacks courage to go for it, as for corners, let Lallana take them, he's naturally two footed and have Kane where he is meant to be.

Agree with much of that SOE.
For some reason I am still quite optimistic about beating Wales!

To be honest I gave up on England the day we lost to Germany in South Africa 2010 World Cup. We have talented players, yet we play too square and the pace of our attacks is pathetic because of the continual square ball at the wrong moment. England players are told not to lose the ball, so they all play the safe pass, this is the fear factor, don't upset Hodgson!!!!! I don't imagine for a second we'd have drawn with Russia if old Harry was Manager, as he should be, we'd have won comfortably but you know our FA...they wanted an 'old slippers' type of Manager, a good PR man rather than a winner.

We've not done been brilliant so far but not too bad. The main positive is we look in good shape to win the group.
Come on SOE, don't tell me you didn't have a little bit of joy when we got that winner!

Perhaps I am tempting fate in writing this r=the day before the Iceland match, but I do not regard Roy Hodgson as too defensive. All 10 games in the qualifying completion were won and in my view Switzerland and Slovenia are reasonable teams.
I also thought that he might leave Strurridge out of the 23 rather than Drinkwater and Townsend and the squad he has selected has quite a few attacking options.

I don't know what went wrong with our international side and the patriotism of our country standing together, united in their support but I don't feel that we should just dismiss them on this poor run. We support out teams through thick and thin but I certainly think they should look at the starting XI tonight. Would love to see an attacking side with Sturridge, Vardy and Rashmore up front (don't understand why Harry Kane gets the nod over Vardy personally) Have such fond memories of Euro 96 of a country proud of our team and hearing 'Three Lions' being sung everywhere! Was that really 20 years ago?!

Humbled by Iceland who were by far the better team. England has the team it deserves. Why do people ever go to watch them? I know I wouldn't even if they played at St Mary's.

They always fail and let the country down, they do not play as a team. Even before the penalty Sturridge had the opportunity to put the ball into Kane's path in front of goal, but he turned and tried to get in a shot himself. Then when it was 1-1 Sterling did a similar thing, instead of putting it into the middle quickly inside the box, he tried to dribble and lost possession. I said two years ago Joe Hart is not the goalie people think and so it continues, why is he number one when frankly at best he is number three. Forster and Butland are ahead of him, though Butland is currently out injured. Hart is finished as an International player for me, and so too Rooney, Cahill, Sturridge, Sterling and Vardy. Not completely convinced about Smalling either at the moment. The tragedy for me was the waste of Rashford, in the seven minutes he had including injury time, he showed how to get past people with blistering pace, what exactly did Sterling try to do all game in the same position? If Rashford had been on after 65 minutes he'd have either scored or created a goal, they had no answer to him. God help England if they promote Southgate as manager, he's not the man for the job. Juergen Klinsmann might be a German but he's well known to English football and is highly respected, that's the man, but as we all know The FA won't even consider it, the word at the moment is David Moyes, another safe pair of hands when what England need is a winner the players can look up to, Klinsmann has the medals to put on the table. Last night was only the 4th game I've watched England for the entire match since Germany 2010 in South Africa, I don't know why I bothered, I should know by now!!!

Personally, not even worried about experience as a manager at International level. The players are the best that their country has to offer, so its just about being tactically aware and able to motivate the team. That comes from the manager himself, passion, drive etc etc
I'd go Rio Ferdinand.

Yes, it's a job any pundit could do. The FA have tried the best English Managers available at the time and foreign managers with excellent track records. All have failed. The FA just refuse to learn from what other countries do. Because we gave football to the world?
There is no way I would suggest who should be the next England manager, but surely it doesn't have to be someone who's been successful in club football or with another country. Look at how successful Iceland are with a former Sweden manager and a dentist. You couldn't make it up. And few of their players play at top flight level in whatever country they play. So why do we continually choose Premier League wunderkids who crumple when confronted with a team that is well organised and passionate?
The right manager may choose good players from EFL 1 plus the Championship With a sprinkling of PL.
As is said after every tournament failure, the whole system needs to be looked at. Will it happen this time? Probably not, but then the FA is in charge of football in England.
BTW I was rooting for Iceland last night & wish they had scored 1 or 2 more as they deserved. In the overall scheme of things the disgrace is hardly important, as there are far more important things to be concerned about at the moment. Anyway, back to non-League football next week. Hooray!
