He was superb when loaned to Pompey in 2012 and in 2019 came back to haunt them with the only goal in the two legs of the League One Play Off with Sunderland. If he is anywhere near his form over the years he will be a stand out National League performer.

I'm generally pretty positive but I'm not sure on this one. Mid 30s, goals record not great in last couple of seasons. Are we repeating past mistakes of signing older players just here for a pay day?

Fairly big signing, averages one in five overall, very experienced, and obviously knew SD at Sunderland. Hope he can get back on track after recent problems.
Could be another good foil for McCallum, who is on paper our most prolific forward. Hopefully we are starting to build a team which scores goals as well as being good defensively.

Am sure Scott Quigley will have something to say about a PM & CM partnership!
Let’s not forget Lyle Simpson either, up against 3 experienced pros. It’s not easy to make it as a professional footballer!

It’s not easy to make it as a professional footballer! Thats EXACTLY what we need to happen. Competition for places and great experience for Lyle to train day in day out with experienced goalscorer. He can only benefit from the experience.

It’s not easy to make it as a professional footballer! Lyle Simpson will pass through like every other youngster, I'd hate to say but this is how the club has been run over recent years. Let's be honest the EDS is a waste of time! So many players could have been given a chance. Even at conference south level no one given a real chance, no point giving a youngster 45 minutes or a sub appearance every now and then, they need time. Something we obviously can't give. We send out players on loan and never see them reach the first team. IMO I feel EDS is a waste of the clubs time and money unless given the youngsters a real opportunity!!

The EDS can look like a waste of time because some of them don't quite make the grade but it certainly isn't, look at Tom Bearwish for example ok he's not with us but he has become the main man at a big club like Weymouth at such a young age. A - it employs coaches and staff , we have great coaches and staff at the club, many have now worked their way up so the kids through the seasons have consistent messaging from them. B - it gets good football playing kids interested in EFC, the words spreads year upon year so the talent will increase year upon year, that might not become clear for another 10 years yet but I'm sure we have a better framework than AFC Bournemouth who have always had poor academy systems. This might not generate fans but it does generate good reputation about the club, we have to turn away kids from all over the south of England who want a chance to play for us. C - it's consistently creates success stories, that might be lads playing at step 7 all the way up to us and hopefully the premier league but if we can keep kids playing and get them into paid football at any level that's brilliant from us. Just look at how we boss the Hants cup now with an XI, these used to be out and out first team fixtures once upon a time, now an EDS mix gets us to finals. D - its a big money making scheme for quite little effort once the groundwork has been laid from the u5/u6/u7 (I don't know what age groups start at) but they are paying fees into the club, then for the college first/second/third years we recieve payments for getting them through college/degrees. That why every tom, dick and Harry club down to step 5 want a national League alliance club. Easy money

Didn't Rutherford come through EDS?

Rutherford was an apprentice at Plymouth Argyle until he was released at 18. He joined our EDS scheme but after 45 minutes of their first friendly at Alresford he was included in the first team for friendlies. Earned himself a professional contract and didn't play at all again for EDS. So probably spent about 3 weeks with the Academy here.
With the number of players who actually become first team regulars from own youth set up you can see the argument that you just as well wait and pick up the cast offs from EFL/Prem clubs at 18. Even when you come up with a gem of your own, like Joe Adams, they will be picked off in the opposite direction. I see Wigan have just extended his initial 18 month contract by another year.
As Callum says though it is a significant source of income through the Government payments for taking over their education rather than them being in main stream colleges. Hence the reason we have 7 full time Academy sides, 3 playing in the National League U19 Youth Alliance and 4 in the U19 Tactic League. It all gives the club a significant profile and there is certainly an argument that it is not all about players making it to first team level as, I assume, the club has played a part in helping a number of lads into sport related careers.

We do need an EDS and it certainly is a money spinner for the club. However, realistically, even at Prem clubs, its hard to break through to the first team and become a regular. Even if you get 1-2 break into the first team every couple of years, it would be seen as a success at any level & i think we just about achieve this at EFC.

Very true and he was 20 before he moved to Southampton having played 30 plus first team games before his big break.
