Well, Michael, I would suggest the best people to judge whether PSFs are worthwhile are football clubs and their managers. Can anyone name a team that has eschewed PSFs? Don't think there will be one. Or are you talking about it from a fan's pov? I enjoy PSFs to see new players, eg. OK, as a game and spectacle they are a bit tame, but there are always fellow supporters fo talk to and sometimes the o position is interesting. Anyone else notice Alex Lacey, Gills' No 4, who had a spell on loan with us from Luton during, I think RH' s first season , in charge?

Yes I agree nobadspitfire, clearly up to the individual football cubs and managers to decide. However over the years I have talked to a number of football people, including Paul Doswell and many were far from convinced that they are relevant. Football people are by their nature, very traditional and conservative (note the small c), and I think most clubs have friendlies, because they always have. Certainly the biggest clubs have friendlies to raise cash for themselves, or to help smaller clubs raise cash, and I have absolutely no problem with that. What, for example do you think Southampton got out of losing 3-0 to Derby last week? about as much as Derby did - nothing! Just my opinion, but I believe the relevant stuff is stuff worked on behind closed doors, and interestingly more and more pre season games, are these days being played behind closed doors. I gave up on these games years ago, seeing them as little more than training exercises and I wouldn't watch training either. Though each to their own, and here's hoping the pre season in its entirety will be shown to be spot on when we kick off in 10 days time.

Each to their own. I won't usually pay lots of money to watch a PSF for the reasons you mention, either, but personally I'm quite happy to pay last night's price to watch our squad in action, and also I was interested to see some of the Gills' players.
Ten days and one more game before the season starts, we should also be able to see the team in a reasonably advanced state, and people are playing hard for their places now.
As I said above, I see some areas which have been improved (right back, a decent centre-back) areas that I'm not sure about yet (central midfield) and areas where we definitely need some improvement (goalkeeper). Forwards need sharpening up. Recent new signings need match time.
The game wasn't uncompetitive either - we played well first half, and Gills felt obliged to step up a gear after the break to avoid an embarrassing defeat. Compared to the Hants Senior Cup game v AFCB last season, I felt this was much better entertainment, for example.
I must admit I shelled out a tenner last Sat to watch Havant and Waterlooville v Wycombe Wanderers and felt it would have been good value at half the price, although again I was keen to watch the away team. H+W looked pretty good, by the way, and the front two impressed me - keep playing like that and they may finish out of the bottom four this season ;-)

Who will end up in the bottom four next season? Braintree has to be one, promoted from 6th place last season says it all. Solihull lost their manager in the summer, that probably does it for them, he kept them up when all was lost when he took over last November. I think Maidstone could fall this time, they have struggled the last couple of years. The last choice is Barrow, they aren't attracting the right players any more due to their location, and they are nowhere near the side they had a couple years back.
BRAINTREE SOLIHULL MAIDSTONE BARROW
Corals have Salford City at 2/1 favourites for the title, its a one horse race according to corals then!!!!!!
