Oh dear oh dear....what a shambles. The mass clear out is not happening, we still have no pace and players nearer 30 than 25. Most of these players took us to within 4 points of relegation, take away the goals from the loan players, Matthews and Bloom, we would be in National South now.
I think AH has let us down, but we really do not know what is happening at the moment do we, what with change of ownership coming.

Unfair to say AH has let us down. We need to be patient and wait to see about new owners. There could still be movement of players out on a season or shorter term loan basis which would free up space for younger/newer blood. AH did say a lot of contracted players would be in for a shock after the Macc game. Let's just wait and see what happens.

Well, wasn't expecting that! So, next season we'll already be 2 potentially 3 players down, as I can see Reda and Cressy picking up injuries in the pre-season friendlies, and tbh I can see Beano staying at Poole Town.
To me, it seems that this isn't AH's doing, but RH wanting to stamp his authority. Despite there being a "top 6" budget available, I can't really see any vast improvement on last season, but anyway, let's just see what happens........

Doesn't say anything about Ross Flitney. Will he still be player/coach or just coach?

Perhaps it's too expensive to pay off some of the players on contracts. There are at least three that I'd rather have hoped we could have released.
IMO a bit harsh on Ayo, a useful player to have in the squad, maybe Childs will get a chance if he proves his fitness. For me he's still unproven.
Worst thing (apart from Matthews and Broom not being here) is that there are only about 6-8 new players we can probably bring in. AH has said that he need to bring the age of the squad down, so hopefully we'll be after those young hungry players I'm always going on about. I for one don't know how much choice he had with the contracted players so I don't think he's let us down.
Perhaps Sunderland will be interested in Beano? ;-)

Jamie Turley made available by Newport at the end of the season.

Doesn't look like there were many decisions to be made at this stage, there were only 7 players in the squad who were out of contract. Can't really argue with any of the decisions made at this stage, would think Togwell and Hoyte were both on good money, looks to me like any new owner is still going to be handicapped on the pitch by the decisions made in the 2016/17 season, so unless they have a pile of money to chuck at it I think we are looking at another season of consolidation hopefully followed by a big change and push forward next summer.
I don't have the full monty on Sunderland but I think SD is going into a very similar situation, other than the mistakes he is inheriting will not be blamed on him and they went down so consolidation will be better accepted for the next season.

Think Simon was on the right lines here that perhaps this is RH stamping his authority. Make no mistake this is a PR balls up because just two weeks or so ago AH said there were going to be surprises for a lot of his players when the retained list came out, and he wasn't saying the surprises would be retaining them, he meant they were going.
You look around at the teams that struggled this season in our league, Barrow, Maidstone, Hartlepool, and Solihull, can you imagine any of them keeping 13 players and releasing just 4. It makes absolutely no sense. Are we saying the eight or so new signings are going to be automatic selections because if so, why retain 13? We look ok up front, but we should be in for Akinde if we are serious about pushing for PO next season, but by retaining most of the squad, any newcomers are going to think twice aren't they, that EFC might struggle again next season.

The Sunderland wage bill is believed to be £35m a year, that was crazy even at Championship level, did Sunderland prepare contracts that reduced wages if relegated from the Premier... £35m would suggest they didn't which is just shocking for a known yo-yo club. I can't imagine Sunderland retaining many players on inflated wages in League One so there has to be a mass clear out, but they've got to be careful of FFP regulations. They will have the biggest support by a country mile in League One but even so, forming a new team and expecting to win the league is not going to be easy, every club will want to beat them next season, every game for Sunderland will be a cup final...46 of them!!!!

Most of the retained players are those who have contracts already for next season. Cresswell, Reda, Stack, Constable, Boyce, Yeates, McCallum, I think more all have another year. So can’t exactly blame the club for keeping them. Would cost this years budget just to pay them out of their contracts, would be madness!! It’s best to keep them and use them than pay them out of their contracts and lose them.
Many of you hear are jumping the gun big time. The summer will be long and plenty will be happing with contracts etc behind the scenes. Also, I imagine RH will go to sunderland with Stew. Watch this space. Therefore I can’t imagine he’s had too much input to this retained list

How long are these contracts? They were (mostly) all signed during the 2016/17 season & so this is 3 seasons with etc same ****e players!!! Keeping Boyce & letting Ayo go sums it up and other season of mediocrity ahead.

It is irrelevant what the squad is in early May. Judge the squad at the end of July. To be suggesting AH has let anyone down at this stage is frankly ludicrous.
