Do you believe Richard Hill is the right man to take us forward in the long run then?
He is the right man to take us through until the end of the season. In May we sit down with him, review the season and see where we both want to go. These days in football it is impossible to do more than take one season at a time.

Do you believe Richard Hill is the right man to take us forward in the long run then? He is the right man to take us through until the end of the season. In May we sit down with him, review the season and see where we both want to go. These days in football it is impossible to do more than take one season at a time. In a word - yes - but in reality the only person who can tell us if Richard Hill is the right man for the long run is Richard himself. The period 5 years ago which I referenced was characterised by his ability to analyse and improve and then analyse and improve again. I could probably write a book about it but that's already been done. Where the reality might come in, is that today's situation is a bit more complex. Eastleigh is a bigger club than 5 years ago with bigger challenges and bigger expectations. Those expectations come from not just the supporters but also from the owner and indeed many other places from the media to current and prospective sponsors. That creates its own pressures but good management involves being able to put that to one side and to stick to your principles. From the matches I have seen, which is most of them, I think we will be fine this season, and as you suggest there will be a taking of stock at the season's end. I really don't want to see anyone at our club even thinking about changing managers for some time to come.

Just to translate the sanitised inoffensive word - ****yse is an*lyse or to put it another way, ana*yse.

One important difference between five years ago is that this time Richard Hill has had a pre-season in which he has bought in the players he wanted and not retain those who had done enough to justify retention. In the 2013/14 season he had Ian Baird's players to work with.
One can of course compare the 2014/15 season when the playoffs were reached, but on that occasion 4 of the first 7 games were won and the team were scoring more goals in the early part of the season,

That's a fair point Malcy but bear in mind that he has started from zero this time whereas his last start gave him Suvs and a couple of other dependable players. You are right though in essence and I would be interested to know your take on what you would do now if you were Stewart Donald.

I think that the question of what I would do if I was Stewart Donald is a difficult one as for me establishing ourselves as a National League club with improved gates and facilities with fans paying Southern League prices for home games is not something we could have not envisaged a few years ago, but I believe that Stewart is determined to take the club further than that.
I would say that some projects have worked very well, whereas in other areas quick changes have not necessarily improved things, but I think that it is hard to get everything right at a club. With the pitch one thing that has not been mentioned is that we have had quite a few different people have assumed responsibility for it' maintenance, which I do not think has helped matters, although I do not think this has been a factor in the current situation that exists.
With respect to your comment about players I think that when he returned to the club Richard still had a few players who had played for him in the National League, a goalkeeper he rated highly and the player he appointed captain and I think that the absence of our current right back who I believe was there when Richard took over has meant that other players have had to play out of position to cover.

Yes, as I was saying in my original post, "....sorting out that injury list might be a high priority". The other thing to bear in mind is that, although RH did have the close season to recruit and prepare, I believe he was not able to land the main players he was angling to sign and, like first time round, he has had to make do and mend to begin with. I have to say though, I can't think of too many players who were at the club when he returned who had previously played for him, other than Michael Green and James Constable.

I believe that Craig McAllister and Ben Strevens rejoined the club when Martin Allen was manager which meant that three of our five leading goalscorers when we were the second leading goalscorers in the division in our first season of the National League were still at the club, even if they are now all three years older.

Yes I think they did. I tend to think of them as part of the management/coaching team rather than of the playing squad but yes, they both ended up on the pitch on Tuesday night. I don't imagine either of them would see themselves as regular first choice players these days though.
