From AFCW website -
Today's pre-season friendly game at Eastleigh has been cancelled.
Yesterday we discovered from a newspaper article that the Eastleigh pitch was being laid this week and would not be finished until the day before the game.
As a result, we arranged to visit the ground early today to inspect the pitch. In our view the pitch was not suitable to play on and so the game has been called off. We are very sorry for the inconvenience to our fans, some of whom may already have set off to the game.

Sounds like the wombles didn't want to play. Will be interesting to see what happens with the pitch tomorrow that will tell us whether they had a point or not.

If they didn't want to play, why fix up the friendly in the first place, and if they only decided this a few days ago, why not just say so and save everyone the trouble. Would they really travel down here with all those players, looking for an excuse not to play? I find that very hard to believe.

"Sounds like the wombles didn't want to play."
I don't buy that. You're talking about a Football League One outfit not a Hampshire League side. They had arranged to trial an England U18 player and a Dutch pro among others at the game according to their website.

This is a bit of an embarrassment and I hope heads roll with the company that laid the pitch. I can't imagine a professional club would just pull out of fixture at the eleventh hour without good reason.

Nothing wrong with the pitch, it has been passed, one of the wombles said they don't play on turf! I'm sure when you see it you will be pleasantly surprised. It should have been played.....easy!

There was no inspection by a referee today.
"Yesterday we discovered from a newspaper article that the Eastleigh pitch was being laid this week and would not be finished until the day before the game."
Very odd that AFCW didn't realise we were laying a new pitch this week. Its been plastered all over our social media. Doesn't really tie in with them being a professional club & diligent about the surface their players performed on.
I reckon as soon as they realised our pitch was newly laid they decided they didn't really fancy it. Don't particularly blame them for that, but given that's the case the game should have been called off a few days ago, not left until today!
As for the state of the pitch, I'm sure we will all make our judgements at the Fun day tomorrow. Eastleigh FC are obviously confident its a playable surface given we have a non competitive game on it tomorrow.
Of course if it was a competitive match and a ref had deemed it playable then a refusal to play would presumably mean we were given a walkover, or more likely, AFCW would have decided it was "playable".
