I know RM said it in reference to JC's stupid booking last Saturday but he said if the team played well at Swindon it would be unfair to drop anyone if they deservedly took their chance. So Essam and Wilson to start? Surely that's a yes. Stern on the bench? Santos back? Suddenly RM has more options, nice problems to have though.

Sounds about right - after SD's post-Swindon Twitter comments it would be hard to drop Wilson anyway ;-) I've always rated Essam so I'm pleased he's starting to make his mark. By the way, I must have missed this the first time, but the Echo quoted RM as saying about Jai, when he said that he may not be in his long-term plans: “He can play the ‘10’ role, but I’m not a big fan of that. What does it give the team?” Doesn't sound very modern or flexible to me.... I know Jai has changed his game this season so it was great to see him feature on Tuesday. www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/14909470.Jai_has_Reason_to_be_hopeful_after_FA_Cup_goal/

The most concerning thing to me about RM's comment regarding not really liking the no.10 role and not considering Jai in this pidgeon holed role is, that when Jai has played as a no.10 he gets you 19 goals a season! Take those 19 goals away and we start to struggle for goals from our frontline. I know that the league table says that we are scoring 2 goals per game, but we are lucky that we have a big scoring set of midfield players who are finding the net more regularly than our strikers are, but what if they dry up?, where is the creation and where are the goals going to come from.... I wasn't at the game on Tuesday night and i haven't seen may recent games at all, but from the TV footage i saw of Jai's goal, you can see how quickly he played that one-two and then latched onto the through ball to score his goal. That is what he gives us when he plays around the edge of the box. We do not have another play in the squad who can play that quick pass and the amount of goals we would get from it would far outweigh the benefits of playing without a no.10 type of player, IMO. Agree with the comment that its old fashioned and quite stubborn just to dismiss a no.10 of Jai's quality. Most top sides still play with a recognised no.10, although the role has changed slightly from how we knew it 10 years ago, but its still essentially the player who is your most creative and who also chips in with a far share of goals each season. Ignore that at your peril RM..

Agree, Sattsy. RM may not want to play normally with Jai in that role, but there is the plan B to consider. RM seems to favour 2 wide midfielders/wingers plus wing backs, but if things aren't going our way in a game with 30/20 mins to go, why not replace one wide man with Jai playing just behind the front 2?

I'm up there so would like to see Ross Stearn play and hope he starts or comes on for at least 30 minutes otherwise why pay the money we have for him. He can only play instead of Luke or Jai so may rest them as we have Aldershot next Tuesday

The quotes from Ronnie are from 2 months ago.
Jai has started most of our games since then.

In truth, Jai has only been playing because of injuries. As soon as all are fit, he tends to get dropped. When he does play, he plays in a position that doesn't make the best use of his strengths. It's a waste of a very talented footballer, IMO. We all see it differently, i get that, but with our strikers struggling for goals, hes the man who finds the net regularly when played in the right role. I think going forward our midfield 4 will be Drury, Coulsen & Stearn, so it leaves 1 spot, which Taylor will get ahead of Jai. No disprespect to Taylor, but when a Taylor gets picked ahead of a Jai, the games gone for me. England have been doing that for years, the likes of Le Tiss etc never got the caps that plodders like Carlton Palmer and Dave Batty got, and that says a lot about the state of English football to me, and its now seeping down into the non league world aswell.

Maybe. Though of the 5 players you list probably most of the time at least one of them will be injured/suspended, specially as we are coming up to heavier pitches and quite a few 2 games a week as well.
Stearn is the big unknown of that lot, I'd be tempted to stick him on the bench for a couple of games, but that's just me.
Jai has had a good run of games recently so at least he has had a chance to show Ronnie what he is about.
I think I could have 5 goes at the XI for Saturday and still not get it.
We shall see!

Sattsy, I think that's a bit unfair on Taylor. His job is to protect the back four, break up play and get the ball to others to attack, a job he does very well (I put him behind Greener and Coulson as our best player this year) BUT I understand what you say about Jai he is definitely a player who creates and can score - in the games we are chasing a win (southport etc) it's frustrating that we take Drury off for Jai. Then as you have said on many an occasion if we had a striker banging in the goals would we be concerned by this.

In a similar way to more being required from Jai than merely playing the number 10 role, I personally think that more is required from the strikers than playing the number 9 role and if that had not been the case they might well have scored more goals. With the current ambitions of the club it is a valuable commodity having forwards who can track back and close down opponents.
I think that successful British teams have invariably needed ball winners as well as playmakers, with people in the former category doing an important job even if their style of play may not be pretty to watch.
I have not seen every game, but I do not personally believe that we missed as many chances against York as has been suggested. On more than one occasion we were denied by a last ditch block which is something we have been good at doing at the other end.

I just named the 5 that have featured in recent games, but there is also Jake Howells who will get in ahead of Jai and not forgetting Dave Pipe, who will fill in for Taylor when he is out injured/suspended. Stern wont be sitting on the bench for too many games, you don't pay transfer fees for players then bench them. Yes Jai has had a run of games, but he can't show RM what he's about if he's being played in a role that constrains his natural ability. It's a bit like putting Mandron at right back, you wouldn't see what he's about playing there... As for Taylor being just behind Greener & Coulson for Player of the season so far, your having a laugh surely!? Coulsen Greener Drury Reda Mandron Will be the top 5 (maybe add Clarke to that by the end of this season). and Cresswell, Partington, Jai & Howells would all be way above Taylor come end of April.

I think Taylor's one of those unsung heroes.
We signed him all of a sudden, he came straight into the team, and he's been pretty much a fixture ever since. He does the dirty work very well, breaking up attacks, then passing the ball to more creative players (Jai, for example. No reason why they shouldn't play together). His positional play is excellent. He can also fill in as a central defender and his passing is actually not bad on its own.
But because of the role he plays, he is rarely noticed. One of his best games came last week against York, for example, in my opinion.
Yes, Coulson and Drury will get the headlines, and rightly so. Greener is a greatly improved player this season. But I'm sure RM rates Taylor as an equally important player for the team.
I could add that I think Reda's not been at his best in the past few league games, and Mandron is still a bit 'hit and miss' to reach my top 5 so far. Cresswell has been consistently good so far.

No Clarke and no keeper on the bench. Seems a bit harsh to drop him for the abberation on Tuesday, so is he injured?
