Luke Coulsen only stepped up one level from Conf South to our level, & he hadn't long been out of the Man City Academy. Bentley would be stepping up 3 levels, and his previous 4 years were spent playing at Wessex level. That's a massive difference. Not getting at Bentley, the lad is very decent for his level, but not many players can jump 3 levels in one go and fit in comfortably. I see Bentley as one that it would be too much of a stretch. The other factor is, he has a good full-time day job, that i doubt he would want to give up to go full time with us, on what would likely be far lower wages that he earns as a teacher. At the age of 25, i doubt i'll give up my job for a 1 years contract at a club i know deep down i'll not even get on the bench of & would then be discarded at the end of the season.... We saw exactly the same thing happen with Leigh Mills, who we also signed from Winchester and who oddly enough was also a teacher.

Poole Town would probably suit Warren - Newly promoted team playing in the national South Killlick is an admirer (been in for him before) And also there part time so could keep the day job
Maybe we'd be a step too far at this moment, but he's (Bentley) not getting any younger! If something was put on the table this summer then he'd have a tough choice on his hands (again nothing to lose on our part I believe)

we're missing an intermediate step.
Yes yes yes and yes again. This hits a very big nail firmly on the head. We have had this problem for as long as I have been supporting Eastleigh. Go back 20 years and we had a reasonable team playing at Wessex league level. Perhaps a little stronger then than is now as so many of the better clubs have gone onwards and upwards. The Wessex league was a physically strong powerful league, with many canny semi pro's who knew their way around the game. We had a superb reserve team playing in the Wessex Combination (reserve league), we would challenge for this every year and often win it. I used to prefer watching our reserves they were brilliant, but they were playing mickey mouse football, the combination was of a terrible standard, barely above Sunday league and the gulf between the combination and Wessex league was just too big - hardly any of our players broke through, so they would drift off to play for other teams, one of our best (who reputedly had a trial for Arsenal once (Holmes was his name), ended up playing for Micheldever! And our youth team were one of the best south of London and used to regularly compete against professional teams in the youth cup. But there was no progression, no possible progression. I reckon in the 24 years I have been watching Eastleigh I have seen at least a dozen footballers who could have been outstanding footballers for this club, earnt us serious money in transfer fees, who didn't because there was no progression or integration of the club.
Not blaming anyone and I don't have the answer, but, in my opinion if we are to build a sustainable club who will hopefully play and maintain league football; we need to somehow integrate all the players into this club, with a chance of progression. We need to inspire players to join us knowing the world is their oyster, not with the promise that if you are any good, you never know you might make it at Winchester!
All these years later and still we have this situation.

I think that Charlie Austin was fairly young when he broke into the football league, and my understanding was that Andy Forbes jumped two levels when he joined us initially. With respect to Jamie Vardy's moves from Halifax to Leicester via Fleetwood I think in both moves he effectively moved from the Conference North to the Championship via League 1.
Certainly the move from part time to full time football is a big one and in the league Warren played in last season there is more difference between top and bottom than there is in the National League.

Sorry - At the end of the first paragraph of my last post I should have said League 2 rather than League 1.

For every 1 player that does it, there are 50,000 that do not.

For every 1 player that does it, there are 50,000 that do not. Which kind of makes the point that we'd need thousands of professional clubs to provide progression for a tiny fraction of the perceived youth talent in the country.

He is at Gosport isn't he?
Be interesting to see how he gets on this season. Realistically its probably last chance saloon for him to get higher up the pyramid - he needs a decent season & 20+ goals.
Hard to predict how Gosport will do this season as well

Didn't waste my time watching them lose to Moneyfields this evening.

Have to agree Gosport looked good against Aldershot but they put out a development team against Money's Warren did not get into the Aldershot game much but the young lad that played for us against Stoneham again looked good even though he only got on in the 60th minute.
