Well, we beat the Prawns. How good is that?
Notes from the match:-
- Possibly the strongest bench we've had for a long time.
- One of the rare occasions when Cav Miley has played at the Silverlake and not been booked.
- A ref who knew what was what.
- Again - every player putting in a shift - excellent team spirit even when they were winding each other up.
- Two Danny Whitehall goals we might all remember for as long as he remembers them himself.
In other news, England beat South Africa by an innings and Everton didn't lose at Brentford. Just getting that beer now.

A game of 2 half’s, certainly first 25mins thought we (Southend) were excellent and had you rattled.
Certainly felt we were deservedly in front at the break but the change of shape allowed you guys to control the second half. A rather scrappy half with a lot of shirt pulling and hoof ball, we faced similar against Borehamwood and struggle against that physicality and we lost our way and you took control. Would have taken a point before kick off given your form at home.
Credit to Whitehall scored an absolutely screamer for your first goal caught us completely ill prepared and took it early.
The free kick right at the death was never a free kick and felt the ref completely lost control the last 20mins very poor officiating but appreciate you guys won’t be complaining.
Hopefully at roots hall it will be a similar battle with a better official.
On the final whistle in particular there were 2-3 Eastleigh players whose conduct was unprofessional and unacceptable and only goaded fans further, however given the conduct of Bradbury all game there is no surprise there.
Certainly in the away end the club need to be better prepared for a crowd, 2 small portacabin toilets and small kiosk with minimal supplies though may have learned from last season.
Thank you to those fans in sherwoods who were welcoming today, had a good chat with a number if you before the chairman felt it best to kick us out despite arrangements with the commercial manager.
Appreciate Bradbury releasing Miley as he has been our best player so far this season. Was really impressed with Harper for you today caused us lots of problems.
Good luck for the season and as a Hampshire local hope both our sides will be up in that top half / playoffs come the end of the season.

But yes you did with a great deal of help from the referee

Really good game, one we did very well to win, given that I thought Southend were a good team, and they should be around the playoffs around the end of the season.
Obvious highlght was Whitehall's first goal, nobody else in the squad (and probably in the league) would even have thought about trying a shot from there, never mind scoring it.
Southend looked the better team in the first half, we came back well in the second, putting a lot of pressure on the visitors, and working even harder than in previous home games, which says a lot.
Contentious maybe, but I thought Abrahams should have got a red card for his assault on the keeper in the first half - caught him round the neck. Totally stupid. Couldn't believe the ref only gave him a talking-to. He tried hard not to give cards early on, which, as often happens, meant that he gave too many cards in the second half as it got a bit heated, both on the field and on the bench, it seems. Otherwise I thought he was OK, the decisions Southend were getting upset about, he looked to me to have got mostly right.
For the second home game running I saw some of the teenage fans running out of the ground at the end, hotly pursued by some other irate fans. I think this needs sorting out, the fans on the standing side are obviously too close and are winding each other up. Our fans over there (formerly in the green stand) were getting comments on the visiting fora last season too for doing this sort of thing too.

Abraham’s should have gone in the first half for something that just wasn’t even necessary. Second half Eastleigh were much better and the better team and deservedly equalised. As a southend supporter the ref gave nothing first half there should have been a few given. Second half though he seemed card happy and certainly another foul on our keeper by Whitehall went unpunished. The free kick at the end did not appear to be a free kick but a well taken finish. In our 2 visits to the silverlake there seems to be a group of what 14-15year old given it large, goading and then when it escalates they move away and leave others not involved. It was a shame there were a few issues between the sets of fans both inside and outside the ground because the game for 65minutes was a closely contested one until the ref lost the plot.

Quite a finish. Did not see that coming after an hour!
The Subs seemed to make the difference, we were a lot more potent going forward. Can’t wait to see the 1st Whitehall goal back again, that was amazing.
Agree that he “won” the free kick for the second goal. There was minimal contact and he did what strikers often do and got the free kick.
I know football fans generally say the opposite but from what I have seen & gathered so far 10 points from our 5 games has flattered us somewhat. Not that I am complaining.

Cav Miley you correctly praise and he went through the game today creating space, angles and opportunities. Eastleigh should never have released him and credit must go to your manager for recognising the qualities of an excellent player and getting the best out of him. Good luck.

Looking at the gap between the away fans and home fans in the terrace I think it isn’t big enough. There seems to be a bit of nastiness from both sets of fans and it’s creeping in every game, we want atmosphere but it’s getting stupid now. Youngsters from both sides!! It’s not nice to see, certainly at this level of football. Needs to be more space between them.

He was certainly trying to impede the keeper illegally from getting the ball back into play quickly but the keeper's dramatic fall was rather theatrical - a bit like his rolling around on the ground towards the end of the game when it was still 1-1 and we were getting more of the play. Possibly a yellow might have been justified just for laying hands on the keeper but it was possibly the keeper's theatrics which influenced the ref not to card Abrahams at all.

I thought that free kick was given for the trip on Vinny Harper which brought him down after he had dribbled past 4 or 5 Southend players. The ref had to deal with a lot of tripping, pushing and shoving and shirt pulling plus time wasting and loud dissent coming from the Southend players and bench. They were a very frustrated bunch indeed. Generally I thought his (the ref's) decision making seemed to be fair - on occasion he blew the whistle after waiting for an advantage that didn't materialise and that can make a good decision less obvious to us supporters. Perhaps that's why some of the posts on here have questioned his decisions. I agree totally that the substitutions were exactly what was needed at the time. I would be happy to see all three make the start next game.

Gotta say the Southend forum is a tad funny this morning. Some knob wants VAR, Others moaning about the ref coming from the New Forest. Oh and a few mentioning hilly having a go at their media guy. Dan Mays is wetting his pants on twitter about being told to leave the hanger. No away fans was the order. So you had to go nipper end off. Doubley so if you were silly enough to have colours on. Southend need to stop grumbling about this and that and worry about there manager. Not having a plan B.
Our you kids need to watch the game a bit more. Rather than baiting the away fans. I'v seen it at other grounds and it aint clever. We got some good lads in that lot. Sort the Mackoy stand all the way along. Same as the Southend side yesterday. The problem will be solved.
Now here's the big shock. praise the manager for changing ours after half hour. He has a plan B. Also for keeping the young lad on. Could quiet easly have taken him off. Young Rutherford must be a very proud lad this morning. Also we have been known as a soft touch. We are to nice. Well yesterday was great to see us not being nice. Giving them as good as we got. They didn't like it. More of the same please. If that means clubs dont like us. I for one don't give a **** about any other club than my own. I for 1 bloody loved yesterday

Possibly a yellow might have been justified just for laying hands on the keeper but it was possibly the keeper's theatrics which influenced the ref not to card Abrahams at all. Possibly, but the contact was over shoulder height, which, unless the rules have changed recently, is a red card. Utterly stupid anyway. Not just that the subs were good by Mr. B, he also made them 15 mins earlier than the Dag and Red game, and in both games it looked like we were not going to breach the opposition defence despite the effort. As I said after reading reports of the away games, we haven't had so negative publicity since the successful (note: successful) Hill years. The work rate of the team in the home games has been excellent, none more so than yesterday. We have, however, needed luck (Wealdstone, Dag and Red) and genius (Southend) to get the goals. I thought Cav Miley was very good for Southend yesterday - dare I say a different level to what Eastleigh managers got out of him? Different role, different responsibilities sometimes improves players. I'll have to watch the highlights, but I still can't see where the ref was so terrible, apart from not dealing with Abrahams, and not, as Maysie pointed out, not giving Whitehall a card for the challenge on the keeper. One thing the Southend Forum was unhappy about was the 'baiting' of their fans by the players after we scored. They certainly seemed very angry, and I saw objects were thrown, but I had eyes only for the activity on the bench at that point, which was getting pretty tasty too. Did anyone see any more? Were we excessive in our celebrations over there?
