The object of friendlies is not to beat them but give the players a chance to get match fit and try out different players/formats etc. Its's not pompey but the decision not to play them was theirs as our pitch was and is playable. They didn't even offer to play us at Fratton Park.

The object of friendlies is not to beat them Thats not strictly true, theyre also confidence boosters if they go well. So that's league football clubs x2 wrong, and Eastleigh right..ok.

The object of pre season friendlies is 1) fitness 2) familiarise new players with each other 3) English tradition innit!

Along with the old traditional saying "There's no such thing as a friendly". Everyone wants to do their best and impress the manager, by playing well and winning.

43mins. Danny Hollands puts us 1-0 up with a well taken goal. 3 triallists on view, Tom Leggett at right back, Harvey Read (ex Stoke City youth but from Southampton area) at CB with Reda, & Dominic Vose, ex S****thorpe Utd left midfield. Very poor pitch here, resembles an American Football field with brown lines where drainage channels are. My back lawn looks in better condition.

So ended 1-0. Not the best of games on a terrible pitch. Loads more Spitfires at that game than home supporters.

I did think that when Didcot built the new ground the pitch would be an improvement on Station Road, but I wonder if anyone who has been to both grounds has formed that opinion.

To be fair, I'd suggest the state of the pitch was largely down to a lack of watering system at the club, which is completely understandable given their status. They probably also don't have the resources to cut & roll the pitch on a regular basis throughout the summer. It is rather ironic given our pitch problems that we probably played there without inspecting it first. With hindsight the game should probably have been played at the Silverlake.

My brother inlaw heard the groundsman say the club would not let him water the pitch due to the cost they could not afford
