3 Centre Backs, Goalkeeper, Striker, Central Midfielder? Maybe 1 or 2 youngsters like Luke Coulson also if I was guessing (perhaps a young striker and a winger) ? Also Big year for Tony Lee and Co!! Really hope at least 1 of our current youngsters can get regularly in the squad.

Mustapha Bundu of Hereford might be a youngster worth taking a punt on.

Oxford have let a few go...
Sure there be plenty of interest in Johnny Mullins, an experienced centre half who made 51 appearances last season. Just the sort we need to get us into the football league!

Surely we need at least 2 new top class strikers??? Beano, Yemi, Lafayette + 1, is not going to fire us to the title or the play offs. Please don't go cheap or skinny on strikers, we need 2 top drawer proven 25 goals strikers to be signed. There are not enough goals in this team with just 1 new striker to challenge at the top. I strongly suspect that when it comes down to it, Lee & Lafayette are likely to go out on loan again, so it leaves us with Beano & Yemi +1, and that won't scare anyone in this league....

I'd still like to see a big ugly lump up front that will lean on, push and bully defenders and capable of holding the ball up ?

I think with the right strike partner Beano will get 20 he was only 1 short of that this season. Our second striker needs to get more than 5 or 0 if he get 20-25 then I think that is 20 more than last year and that could be the equivalent of the extra 8 wins we will need. I do not think there is a manager in the league that would not play James Constable in his frontline if he was playing 2 up front and had him in his squad not based on what they say to us. I would like to see Beano play with a big man alongside him who scores goals.
Can you really not see us not making the play offs Sattsy if Beano gets 19 like this year and our other striker gets 20. Those extra 15 goals would surely see 6 more points!! I will drink out of plastic cups all the following season if that happens up front and we don't make it!!!!! Not that I am saying just 1 striker but it would not worry me too much at the start of the season.

No, sorry Stew, i don't see us threatening for the title or play offs with Beano upfront, whether he plays in a 2 or a 1 on his own. I don't see him getting 19 goals again either. Not sure what makes you think he will hit 20 goals, he hasn't done that in the last 6 seasons and he's not getting any younger, quicker or any better as a finisher. I'm sure that in those 6 years, he will have played alongside some decent strike partners, but he still hasn't hit 20 goals in any one of those seasons. He seems difficult to play alongside, so you'll do well to even find a striker who can play with him, imo. I love his work rate and i like the way he plays as a rough & ready striker, but his style doesn't suit the way we try to play. If we intend to play a stylish passing game, then he's even less of a fit for us. He doesn't make the clever runs that a top striker makes and that's how we will score goals, with 2 cleaver and quick strikers who can play on the shoulder facing goal, not like Beano who plays with his back to goal wrestling defenders all day long. I also don't agree that every manager would play him, if they would, & if he was that much in demand, then why aren't they trying to prize him away? I really fear it could be another wasted season if we don't find the right front 2, and keeping one of last seasons misfiring strikers, gives me the feeling that we are being blinded by loyalty to certain players again, just like we did last season when it cost us dear. It's your money and you need to do whatever you feel is right, but Beano + 1 doesn't give me the exciting vibe that we are going to be unstoppable next season. I remember telling you last year when you signed Matt Tubbs, that if you didn't also sign the right partner for him, that he would be an expensive passenger in games. Blowing my own trumpet here, but i was bang on, yet we did nothing to address that and kept persevering with Beano as his partner and look where that got us. Well, as said, i have the same feeling here regarding keeping Beano as a starting striker, it's not going to work if you want to win the league. Time will tell, but it's very clear to me how this is going to pan out if we only bring in 1 new striker & play Beano in a 2.
So to return your plastic glasses forfeit....if it works out & Beano gets 20+ and we win the title, I'll donate £100 to a charity of Beano's choice.

Sattsy - So you don't think Beano would have scored in any of the final 3 games of the season, plus others that he didn't play through injury and being rested? 1 more goal from those missed games and he'd have hit 20, but you still don't think he can do it? I for 1 hope he hits 20 and when he hits his 20th he wears a shirt underneath dedicated to you!! I'll even buy the shirt! Haha.
I'm surprised at the lack of support for Beano here to be honest! I think he's one of the best strikers in the league. He doesn't only score goals he creates space for other players, draws defenders away, winds up defenders, super passionate and always wants to win. He's a leader and is the first to shout at his peers to get the team going. When he isn't in the team it's noticeable.
How about some of you lot support the team rather than just slate them all?? Our first 2 signings of this window in my opinion are brilliant players for this level. I am already very excited for next season and it cannot come around quick enough!!
Keep calm and get behind the team!!!

No, i dont think Beano would have scored in the last 3 games, given he had only scored once in the previous eleven games before that. As for being one of the best strikers in the league?, 14 other strikers outscored him last season. So on goals at least, he's nowhere near one of the best in this league. Not slating him, just giving an opinion on a player, as i was asked to do. That said, i was very vocal last year that he wasn't the right striker for us and my views were proven right by us finishing outside the play offs because of a lack of goals. Hence my views on the player have not changed for the coming season. Fair play if he smashes the goals to win us the title next season, i'll be happy to eat humble pie and shake his hand, but i don't see that happening, I think the wise move would have been to have thanked him for his service & move him on and start afresh with 2 new exciting strikers that really get us the goals to win the league. We can sign the 2 best creative midfielders in L2 and Beano still wouldnt be on their wavelenght, its just not his game. He's a battering ram of a striker and those kind of players are seen as dinosaurs in the modern game.

Shame we missed out on Andy Cook who today joined Tranmere.think that signing could very much help win them promotion. Elliott Buchanan would be an ideal target in my book, scored goals for fun last season and won't command a big fee, therefore freeing up money for a proven striker from league two also.

If we had had a second striker who scored 15 goals we would have mad the play off though Sattsy thats the point I am trying to make. An extra 10 goals scored by our second striker would have got us at least 5 more points. Here to be shot at but in the teams that finished above us how many goals did their second striker score - not many more than 19 I reckon in most cases. I will check but on that basis on goals alone Beano could and should score enough to be considered worthy of a place.

I don't think it's quite accurate to say we finished outside the playoffs because of a lack of goals.
We scored 64, more than two teams above us, and we didn't have any 'big' wins either. But we conceded 53, the same as Dover, and more than everybody else above us.
This would seem to me to indicate that the rebuilding of our defence is rather a priority. One we've started addressing with the signing of Danny Pipe.
I agree with Sattsy that we may not see much of Lee and Lafayette, and need to add massively to our strike force, and I've also said all along that we haven't really found the right role or the right partner for Beano. But he's there, he is rated by important people in the club, and we need to get the best out of him. And find another goalscorer either to partner him or replace him when he isn't playing (he only played 36 league games last season).
That includes providing him with decent service - something we failed to give to Matt Tubbs, and as said, without the service he wasn't able to add much. Jai has been capable of doing that in the past so we need to get his game right, plus of course add steel and creativity to what we've already got.
