Oh the memories of The Den....i remember Man United played there on a Monday evening Sept 16th 1974..Division Two League Match, we'd already beaten them at Old Trafford in August 4-0 with Gerry Daly getting a hat trick (2 penalties) and rather foolishly we'd gone in The Cold Blow Lane End and we got a penalty, as Daly placed the ball on the spot the word went round that if he scores we don't say a word....only time I've ever seen United score a goal in complete silence!!! That was the only goal of the match and it was the most nerve racking walk back to our coach even with something like 100 police with us!!! As to the friendliest home fans its a close call for me between Bolton (1975 & this season) and Barnsley, but I'd say Barnsley just shade it for me, all they talked about in the bars before the match was 'racing pigeons' they take that so seriously up there!!!!

Barnsley is the most inhospitable ground that I've ever been to. (But then, I was with Chelsea!)

Millwall still hold fans back for an hour after games, and then, in the case of QPR, insisting on away fans getting on a train towards West London, even when they are not going to West London. If this was any other group of people it would be deemed a breach of human rights, when it comes to football fans, still largely considered scum by polite society, it's fine.
The friendliest fans I have ever encountered Liverpool, least friendly (by some way) Leeds. They are seriously bonkers.

I went to Millwall a couple of years ago with Derby, and we were all fenced in, forced through wire tunnels and had no choice but to get the train to London. Police dogs and horses everywhere. Not a pleasant experience...

I was referring to the people, but if its grounds then the worse for me would have to be Mansfield, though that was in the 1970's. Interesting topic this, best ground, worse ground, best fans, worse fans. We all seem to agree on Millwall, with Chelsea and Leeds also getting mentions....Cardiff has some nutters, and in all seriousness so does Luton. One of the reasons I am enjoying the journey with EFC is that we can usually have a drink with rival fans and some friendly banter. My favourite has to be the final hour before kick off in 'The Turf' outside Wrexham's stadium, been there twice now and its just great laughs. It was also very good at 'The Mitre' Stourbridge before our FA Cup game, this is what it should be all about, support your team and respect theirs, have a drink, a few laughs. I've never understood why you should hate someone you've never met just because they support your rivals on the day. Look at us lot, I support Man United, we've got Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs, QPR, Everton, Liverpool, Palace, Luton, Bristol Rovers, Oxford Utd, Watford, and Southend that I know of, we all know each other, we have a drink, and our common bond is EFC and long may it continue that way. Its shameful really that the only sport where there is fighting is football in our country, anyone ever heard of it in Rugby, both union and league? Cricket? Darts even?

I went away to Hillsborough (with Chelsea) in 85, before the disaster, and the Police even then pushed people into areas way too small for the numbers, striking people at will and running horses into crowds of supporters.
At Everton, same year, their supporters threw glass capsules full of some sort of acid at the brick wall behind us so the contents showered on to us.
Coventry supporters broke up their own terraces to throw at us and the stewards just laughed.
I've got plenty more good stories.

Nice post Keith. I did hear a rumour that there might be some Southampton fans amongst Eastleigh's supporters as well as the other clubs you've mentioned there.

Leicester at filbert Street. To small away pen pre Hillsborough. Saw some Chelsea having hot curry shoved in their faces. Not nice. I remember going to Grimsby will Chelsea. That was pretty naughty as well. Had a bit of a eye opener on the way to main road. Whilst being escorted by the police. We got to a big underpass on a roundabout. The city chaps were waiting for us around corner. Coppers just seemed to disappear. Took me worse kicking

What I have taken from this thread is we don't actually have any fans. They are all Chelsea fans in disguise. ;p

Fighting at cricket I have witnessed, given the long day of drinking involved it's never as intense but there were definitely fists thrown at Lords on the pitch when Hampshire won the B&H in 1988 and given that you ran on the pitch to the balcony every year in those days I suspect there were fisticuffs at 10 paces at most finals!! Scariest at football has to be *hite Hart Lane if you are wearing red

Had zero trouble at Millwall when I was one away fan surrounded by hundreds of them pre match using bar/café etc.
But after match still penned in for an hour afterwards by the police "for our own safety" TBH it was the police being heavy handed that was the problem not Millwall fans...

Ref Eastleigh, I guess nothing much to compare with some of the above stories.
A couple of our fans punched at Woking, some hostility at Salisbury, some nastiness/spitting/flag damaging at Newport, An idiot H&W fan jabbing his finger in my chest at a Hants cup game etc etc
Shame it happens but I guess its the nature of the beast
