Hopefully a decent crowd today and a result. A win would be massive

SD said on co comms. Only 6 on contract for next season, front 3, McDonnell, Enzio and Hodson appearances have triggered a 2nd year. Probably about right.

For an hour it was like watching the Rochdale game again - slow buildup, defenders hoofing the ball forward (Macca and Quigley were well handled by their central defenders today) and midfielders not given the ball enough.
But we then realised that Hartlepool were nowhere as good as Rochdale, and with the introduction of Boldewijn, who at least got the ball into dangerous areas, we started to threaten. Nobody seemed to appeal for a penalty, but the ref had seen something (he didn't see Quigley get injured when the defender caught him after clearing the ball, though, nor did he stop play) and we got the equaliser.
After that we looked most likely, hit the post in injury time, but I didn't think we deserved any more than a draw.
Other results see us still four points ahead of the bottom four, but now with no games in hand. Still in a bit of danger, that Maidenhead match on Easter Monday is looking ever more important. Highlights for me were the spectacular (unforecast) hailstorm and the rainbow at the start of the second half. Not a great advert for Non-League Day, I thought.

Do we train to be a decent 2nd half team, certainly what I'm picking up mast few games .
Not seeing much improvement under KD, to be honest!

It wasn't long ago that he said we looked tired in the second half (as did RH earleir in the season).
Maybe he's been working on it! Now for the first half....
Not sure how he can tweak the formation to improve things, to be honest. But yet again we had a left wing-back who is really a midfield player (Reeves), with Greenwood on the bench. Allowing the central defenders to play the ball out (usually long) instead of giving it to more creative midfield players e.g. Maguire isn't paying off any more. I'd like to see Boldewijn back at right wing-back or right midfield, his crossing is better than most. I'm afraid Oscar is a bit wasted at the moment and his confidence looks low. Above all we need to be quicker in the buildup and more proactive. Not sure whether some of the players we've got are capable of that. And as I've said all season, we're missing a focal point in central midfield. Cisse wasn't ideal last season but he was always there to receive and try and distribute the ball..

I don`t think announcing 6 players are being retained is going to motivate the rest of them to keep us out of the sticky stuff

with reference to a central focal point in midfield, I don`t think we have had a commanding midfielder since Glen Southam, l`m not sure if the English or UK style of play actually produces people to play like that any more, maybe its more of a team ethic as opposed to individual brilliance. Maybe if teams relied on a player like that what happens if the maestro is suspended or injured ? Maybe they would have a second one ? Who knows, the thing is we aint got one or anybody like it.

Since being in the NL we've had had Jai Reason, he was talented but I always found him contributing to a slow buildup pattern. Payne and Pritchard also had a go.
I've always wondered if Maguire could sit in that role - he's got the range of passing, he's also got other abilities which would be wasted, but I thought it might have been worth a go. Failing that, Reeves. Or even Rutherford!

I think there are at least three types of midfielder. There is the attacking midfielder who can score 10 goals a season and I would put Jai Rweson and Charlie Carter in this category, there is the ball winning midfielder and I would pout both Danny Woods of our Wessex League winning team and Craig Stanley of our team that reached the National League playoffs for the first time, and there is the midfield player who links attack and defence well, I will leave other people to judge which if any of the defined categories our midfield players fit into.

I always considered Jai Reason to be more of a playmaker, someone who acted as the focal point of the team, who was meant to receive the ball a lot, and make things happen.
As Cisse was meant to do (and did, to some extent) last year. Someone we don't have this year.
That's why I mentioned him, in reply to hey55's point.
I see Hartlepool are getting stuffed tonight at Gateshead.

Malcy - This post made me think. So i'll go with these choices. Top midfielders (i started going 2006):- Hard Man/ball winner - Jamie Brown & Peter Adeniyi. Skillfull - Jai Reason & Anthony Riviera. All round - Andy Drury, Glenn Southam & Ben Strevens. If we had just 1 of these players today, we would be a much better team!

Well Mr Satts, spoken like the very knowledgeable person you are on the subject. If by any chance you know such a player today I'm sure Mr Donald would like you to give him the information.....we can't not use your considerable talent for spotting a player mate.
