Is there any body else besides me that think that VAR is ruining football and it will only get worse.

VAR

Yes. It's difficult enough to get a match ref who isn't a closet Liverpool supporter. Now the ref can be and often is overruled by a Liverpool supporting VAR official. Everton had three points stolen from them at Brighton through VAR. Every time VAR was used in that match it was to try to change a decision in Brighton's favour and the key decisions were made in Brighton's favour. Over several recent matches I can find only one VAR review in Everton's favour and that was after the Everton v Spurs match ref had only given Son a yellow for the tackle which left Andre Gomes with a broken ankle. The VAR people had that changed to a red. Bizarrely at St Mary's a week ago Saturday the Everton support including me were left confused when VAR led to Saints being given two chances to score from a corner. In the second half the ref gave a corner to Southampton and allowed the corner to be taken. The ball from the corner was taken in the air safely by Pickford but the ref then stopped the game for a VAR review (presumably to see if they could find an excuse to give Saints a pen - there's nothing else they could have been reviewing). Once the review was completed the ref signalled for the corner to be taken again. None of us could understand why Southampton were given two go's at taking the corner just because a VAR review had taken place. After all, if Southampton had scored from the first corner, the goal, I am certain, would have stood. The only way a goal would not stand in those circumstances is if it had been scored against Liverpool. The system is totally bent as used in this country. It worked well in the World Cup because it was used to support the match referee. Whatever we think about the refs we get, they have to keep full responsibility for managing the game and that includes making judgement calls on infringements. No one should be allowed to take away that responsibility by overruling them. If VAR does think it has identified an issue it should be left to the ref to view the incident on the pitch side monitor as happened in the World Cup. Some might argue that decisions are reviewed and overturned independently in international cricket but that is a totally different situation where the final decision is always heavily supported by technology and it is of course a very different game.
