I think that a lot has already been said about this, but looking at Eastleigh's record over the last 17 years, it is four promotions, playoffs in four other seasons and two other occasions where the playoff chances have depended on the last game of the season, so it is fair to say that in the majority of these seasons cup competitions have mot presented themselves as our main hope of glory.
I think that in some but not all of the playoff season the team gelled better in the second half of the season and were playing better than when the F A Cup and F A Trophy rounds were contested which might explain some of the early exits.
The one other point is that 2017/18 was one season where there were early exits in the F A Cup and the F A Trophy and there was no promotion challenge to compensate. Even Martin Allen for all his faults achieved a 2nd round proper F A Cup victory and in terms of league results 2017/18 and 2016/17 were on par with each other. I also think that many of the players who plated in both 2017/18 and 2018/19 played much better in the latter season.
