Very entertaining game in which we deserved a point however late, against a very good team who on that form will do well in the playoffs.
Agree with michaelefc about the determination, and where it's been for most of the season (yes - contracts?) - all I can say is that a lot of it seemed to come from the young midfield - again, Broom added to Miley and Matthews (who IMO wasn't quite at his best today) made for a very good combination. As ever the forwards worked hard, and I thought Zeb was unlucky to be hooked, he put in his usual shift. McCallum was again dangerous in the air too, but a lot of his headers went sideways rather than forwards, except for the one in the first half where their keeper made a brilliant save.
The defence wasn't quite as good - the full backs were OK, I thought Boyce could have got a red instead of a yellow for his foul in the first half, and the handball for the second yellow wasn't clever at all. Nor was the foul for the penalty, their forward did very well to get it, but Cress should have known better.

Can't disagree with much of what you say to sum up the game, Michael. First half, I thought we were a bit flat & behind to a soft pen, courtesy of Adam Bromley who normally has a stinker down at the Silverlake. Second half, all credit is due to the team as a whole who never gave up & showed a lot of character to gain a well deserved point, especially after losing Andrew Boyce. Wrexham keeper, Chris Dunn may have got a lot of stick for his "timewasting tactics", but without him, we'd have likley won the game comfortably.
Yes, you do have to wonder why our season & performances have been so up & down. Don't think it's much down to contracts, though, Michael. Most of the players out there are probably under contract for next season. This is what I posted a couple of weeks ago:-
I've done a list of players on a semi-educated guess basis, of who is likely to be with us next season. I may be wrong on some counts so if you know better for sure, please say.
Almost definate:- Stack, Johnson, Wood, McCallum, Yeates, Hollands, Boyce, Williamson
Probably:-Hoyte, Green, Togwell, Zebroski, Miley
Probably out of contract:- Cresswell, Constable, Obileye, Childs
Coaching staff:- Flitney, Strevens, Reid
I've not included Broom & Matthews, both here on loan, or Bearwish, Read & Dennett who have not figured in first team contention all season.
Still , at the moment, we're playing pretty well and long may it continue. A point or 3 at bottom four Barrow on Tuesday would be great.

Strangely entertaining match and a 1-1 draw would have seemed fair to the neutral watcher. I doubt if the Wrexham fans feel the same, but if their goalkeeper hadn't spent so much time-wasting in the second half, we wouldn't have had so much added-time and would have lost 1-0.
A word about the ref, who I gather is about to retire. If true, it's the only decision he's made recently that I agree with. He was awful and seemed to be getting the same adverse reactions from BOTH sets of supporters. Mentioning their fans, a pleasant lot in the Hangar before the game. I wish them well for the play-offs.
Edit - had to laugh at this from the Wrexham forum -
Just taken from the BBC website: "Wrexham got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win against 10-man Eastleigh."
"Andy Davies' side took the lead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes, Scott Quigley dusted himself off and made no mistake after drawing the foul.
Eastleigh's Andrew Boyce was shown a second yellow card after 66 minutes as the hosts went in search of an equaliser.
Wrexham move up to third with the win whilst Eastleigh drop one place to 13th."
"The moral of the story is never file an early report when Wrexham are playing".

Thanks. If what you say is true it seems not. I have to say I am left completely scratching my head. Where did that work effort come from today? Little short of extraordinary. And how wonderful. Can we please have a full season like it August on please?

Well I think all you guys have seriously underestimated what we did today. Wrexham looked from the start a far superior side to the Tranmere, Dover and Aldershot teams I have recently watched us play. We still looked the business and their penalty was dubious. I think we were the better footballing side and with a bit more luck on ref decisions we might have won it. Watching the excellent Rough Justice on TV right now so will postpone further comment for the moment.

For me the last hour was the best I've seen us play this season.

I think we were the better footballing side and with a bit more luck on ref decisions we might have won it. If you look at the Wrexham forum they are really slagging their team off. Letting ten men take the game to them and rescue a point are the least of their comments. As I said, they looked a very good side to me and maybe the Wrexham fans failed to give us credit for the effort and the comeback, preferring to concentrate on their own team - the new management appointments after Dean Keates' departure don't seem to have gone down well. Having said that, their keeper was easily man of the match, and we had by far the best chances, but they passed the ball around well and looked dangerous on the break, although Stack only had a couple of saves to make. But with the names in their squad they should be making the playoffs.

Though I got another prediction correct, at 1-0 down I thought it odd that we took zebroski off and reda on.

I thought that was pretty reasonable because Boyce had just been sent off, for a few minutes prior we had mccallum playing centre back! Although was a flip of a coin whether we took off zeb or mccallum, felt zeb probably had more running in him although mccallum might be better if we were going more direct.
Was impressed with our performance most of this season we'd be on be other end of a last minute equaliser. Thought cresswell probably had his best game since returning. I'd love to see us sign Broom and Matthews permanently in the summer, the former might be more plausible but those two plus 1 or 2 others and think we'd have a very good squad

Perhaps this explains that second half performance? (Echo article, interview with Hess):
“A few words were said at half-time, not just by me but between the group, which was nice because sometimes there’s not enough honesty in the dressing room. "There were a few flare-ups, but nothing personal. It actually did my job for me – some of them took the words out of my mouth.

Can't argue with that, so misses Barrow & Gateshead. Back next Tuesday, if needed.
