Football in Eastleigh over the years was heavily dependent on works teams especially those associated with the railway industry and I've posted examples of them above. However there were many other football clubs playing in local leagues and in the interwar years (1919-1939) a second wave of clubs were founded, many of which were linked to local churches. Here's a superb example - a postcard of the Eastleigh Young Men's Bible Class F.C of 1928/29. Click to expand.

Another postcard turned up on eBay tonight showing the original Eastleigh (L&SWR) Athletic FC ground at the end of Dutton Lane. Dated July 1907. Shows the lads running on the shallow banked cycle track that surrounded the football pitch.

Dead heat by the look of it.

I'd have been more worried by the state of Eastleigh's pitch (or what we can see of it). I know that the Season started later in those days (no overlap between the Cricket and Football seasons) but given it was photographed at the end of July, I suggest that someone had some work in front of them.
Even if they no longer played the likes of the Bristol (Rovers & City), Reading and Swindon clubs as they had done a few seasons earlier, Athletic still hosted Pompey and Saints 2nd XIs in Hampshire League (South) in 1907/08.
