I take your point Keith. If you are saying the DoF role could be something similar to that which Steve Walsh has at Everton for example then I do see the logic.

The only thing I would add to my previous post is that it is reasonable to justify paying someone to fulfil that particular role when you are dealing in player transfer transactions worth tens of millions of pounds. For a non league club it's likely the manager will cover a wider range of duties. Even the smaller Premier League clubs are likely to have a manager at the top of the tree supported by trusted assistants and coaches. This is certainly the case at Bournemouth for example. Personally from my own career outside of football I have always preferred a manager being allowed to recruit his own team rather than the recruitment being done for him by someone in HR who probably doesn't really understand the job they are recruiting for.

I think that one thing about football is that things can change quickly and that in many instances it is better to take one step at a time. I expect that a few years ago not many expected us to be where we were in terms of league position, attendances and general facilities.
If the expectations are high it can put a lot of pressure on people to deliver these expectations and there have certainly been a lot of changes in on the field and off the field personnel.
People say that this league is the hardest to get out of it, but do teams promoted from the National League to League 1 take longer to be promoted from the former than to be promoted to the latter. I think that some of the clubs promoted to League 2 are relegated again within a few years.
