I guess there is now goal line technology to decide if a ball crosses the line, so can anyone tell me what the point is in having the two officials behind the goal? Just like must linesmen, the never seem to make any decisions, so what useful service do they provide?

I suppose it does mean M. Platini can hand out more favours than if he were appointing only four officials per match.
And being mainly a French run competition, a surfeit of bureaucracy is inevitable.
To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't gone to having two refs, one in each half.

Technology whether we like it or not is the way forward. It makes me sick to see cheating and deny fairness. If it is a penalty all well and good, but if a player dives to obtain a penalty through cheating he should get a red card, not yellow but red. That will make players behave in the box and help defenders in fairness. I'd like technology all over the pitch and it will come at some point because players who know their opponent is on a yellow will try it on, again if technology shows such cheating then red card that player. Obviously with TV now recording all games in the football league, mainly for highlight programmes it has to be available to referees if desired. They can afford the costs to do this and elimate cheats which I think is a good thing for the game of professional football...let England's FA lead the game forward in justice and fairness to deny the cheats.
