And football people have different opinions about different players...

I agree that we may well be a better team than Crawley, but facts are, we are a division below them. So its hard to see how a player can be deemed not good enough for us at the lower level, but good enough for a team at the level above. What that tells me is this, we didn't know how to get the best out of him & that Crawley think they can get better out of him. Time will tell of course. But does that show a weakness on our part? If i'm Josh Payne, i'm laughing my head off about being released by a non league football team, as i join a Football league team. I mean it's not as if he dropped down a level to join us and is just moving back up to his natural level. Maybe we will be above Crawley in 2 years time, but that's a very big maybe, and if we are not & Mr Payne is still featuring in most games for his L2 club, then i see that as a bad reflection on us, in terms of our ability to develop the player. When Hilly signed JP, he told me that Josh Payne was the best midfielder in this league, bar none! Yet less than 7 months later, he's deemed unwanted & surplus to requirements by the new manager? Of course our current manager will see plenty of different things in players to what Hilly saw & might want players with different styles etc, that's only natural. But given that Toddy's recruitment has come under question in his short tenure thus far, i wonder if his player releasing decisions, will also come back to haunt him...?

Richard Hill also said that John Akinde 'wasn't fit to play in his living room' the season he won the golden boot,so the statement about Josh Payne I would suggest is another he got wrong. One of the best midfielders last season was Harry Pell who we also released.

RH also said something on the lines that Will Evans will be the best player we ever sign. Injured for a while, played in various roles, then became sent half, then released & joins a mid table team. Agree on Payne. I'm sure he thought he would b joining another National League side. Didn't realise he is still only 25. Will be interested to see how he gets on.

I've stated my opinion of Josh Payne here before. Undoubtedly talented, but was given a role here and in my opinion didn't fulfill it to the standards we needed. I thought it was right for him to move on. I think his presence stopped Jai having so much of an influence too, but then in my opinion there looked to be something not quite right with Jai last season anyway.
He could well do better at Crawley and it's possible his style will suit League 2 better - he may even get a different role. As I already said, good luck to him.
His comments upon signing for Crawley were interesting, a bit of a dig at CT perhaps?: "Speaking to Dermot, he wants to play a style of football which I like , I’m optimistic going forward because I can see the manager wants to try and play good football".

Josh certainly wouldn't be the first player to fit in better at a higher level with a different style of football. It works both ways. I just read an interesting interview with Andrea Pirlo who was complaining that his style of play wasn't suited to the kick & rush mentality of MLS, so he was struggling to make an impact and maybe looking to return to Seriei A as it was more suited to his Cultured style of play.
