Paul, the players I've mentioned are all quality and clever with it. Each of them has shown unwavering commitment in their play and has proved their ability to change a game. With all of them in the team you get higher class cohesion and greater fluency. That's taking nothing away from some I haven't mentioned such as Dan Harding and Josh Payne. I take the point about Paul Reid's pace but his reading of the game in front of him is unsurpassed and you get the feeling he'd throw himself in front of a bus if it was going towards goal. The main point with him though is what he gets out of some of the players around him and I think Will Evans benefits from playing alongside PR. He has produced some man of the match stuff when he's had Reidy there with him. Re the recruitment side we were probably spoilt with the inspired signings that Richard came up with. He might have got one or two wrong towards the end but I doubt if any other manager got such a high percentage of good deals. The problem with relying a lot on dedicated full time scouts is that one man can only be at one game at a time. I'd advocate having someone going to watch players who have been identified through the network once you've more or less decided you want them, but if a player is any good there will always be the risk that he gets picked up by someone else before you make your mind up. I like the loyalty being shown towards Ross Flitney by some forumites (though Michael Poke wouldn't deserve to be dropped right now?) but am a bit surprised there hasn't been some questioning re Jack Midson being on the bench. I'm not trying to call CT's team selection there but Mids is such a good player I'd have thought he would have had his advocates. I cannot disagree with anything you've said here John, there's hope for us yet... The bit about having a scout go take a look at players that have been "suggested" works for me, and whilst i accept you may then miss out if other clubs get there first, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise...Not always of course, so i take your point about timing, but for me, if you want to do things properly and you want to recruit players who WILL be the right ones for this football club, then i still feel that's the right way to do it. How much money have the 6 that i listed cost SD whilst he paid their wages, yet we barely got a full game out of any of them. So balance that out against recruiting the right way and you are still £1000's in profit.

There were as many permanent and loan signings that didn't work out. Be it not good enough, or sat on bench most of the time on a decent wage. To name a few......Batt, Walker, Burton, Fry, Wishart, Rose, Wilson, Dillon, Lacey, Watkins, Pell, Howard, Stanley, Connelly etc etc

I'd have Stanley back in a shot! just what we need, someone who puts a foot in in midfield, doesn't chase the ball and organises well. Pell too, although he was a co ck off the pitch and that's why he was moved out. Lacey was a very good loan signing from Luton aswell.

Agree with Stanley, as mentioned in post yesterday, exactly what we are missing, but he was still signed and sat on the bench way too much, so cant be classed as a good signing by Hill if didnt get the most out of him. Far too many of Richards signings have been labelled co cks off the pitch, yet he constantly told us that he signed players who would fit his 'family' (probably wrong word), but ended up sitting on the bench or moving on quickly, so poor signings. Your probably right about Lacey also. I was undecided if to include in the list.

I would agree with Sattsy, I would have Stanley back in a heartbeat!

SS I have to say I saw most of those names put in some excellent perfomances.
I can see only a few who did not make an important contribution.
Which of those names would you not have signed?

And bearing in mind you can only pick 11 are you going to write off every signing who didn't play every game?

I was at the game last night and in my view there was no shortage of commitment. Up until Gateshead got their first we were doing ok. The goal came out of the blue and you could see after that, confidence was a bit low but as for effort, there was no lack of. The second goal caught Will out down their left but it still needed an excellent volley by Bowman to find the net. Poke had an excellent game in goal. Josh Payne scored as good a 25 yarder as you'll ever see. Yemi looked rusty and off the pace but you'd expect that just coming back from a hamstring. We miss Drury big time, he is class.

I know these comments are from a while back but I felt the need to give a big shout out for Luke Coulson - very exciting player who reads the game well and covers much of the pitch making him potentially very versatile. He certainly deserved his MOTM tonight.
